Thank you both for your replies. All bmd certs show him as James and there are at least 4 generations with a James Leighton. He did have a son Joseph aged 1m on the 1861 (no sign of him on the 1871), so perhaps the enumerator just got muddled! Thanks again for your help. H.

Is the James Leighton Kelsey that married at Mile End 1885 his son because you could check what he called his father on his marriage certificate. He may not have used his given name. Irene

James Leighton Kelsey b. 1833 in Newcastle, son of John Kelsey (Tailor) and Ann Ritchie. I have been trying to trace back through the censuses. By the 1871 he was married and living in Poplar, E. London. On the 1861 there is a JOSEPH L Kelsey (and engine fitter which is spot on) married to Ann from Morpeth - again spot on,....can Joseph be James? It's a good clear image so I don't think I have misread it. I'd appreciate your thoughts...and thankx :-) H.
