Find Ancestors

Hi I have been having a go at looking up the topping family, From the information gathered i found that John Topping born abt 1858/1862 was possibly son of James topping born abt 1832, he was married to an Elizabeth born 1833/1837 Keighly Yorkshire. How do i find the womens maiden names and how am i likely to know whether in barkin up the right trees or not.....? There are some possible marriages but all i seem to find are colums of names, how do i get round this? i.e. Ada Topping may of married Albert T Brown 1915 Elizabeth Topping may of married George Goymer 1912 James Topping may of married a Nancy J Carr 1912 I know May Topping married Richard Barnes (35 Eastam Street) as these were me grandparents' parents, Am i going about this the wrong way? Hi Rachel The best way is to work from May Topping and Richard Barnes backwards. Do you have their marriage certificate? If yes, what was May's dads name and where were they married and how old was she. Julie

As the marriage of May and Richard is the only event of which you are certain, you really need to purchase the cert. It will tell you their ages, plus the names and occupations of their fathers Using that info as a basis on which to search, you should be able to locate both families on the 1901 census and earlier. You haven't given us any info about where May and Richard would have married.......is it safe to assume it would have been in the Lancaster registration district? Reg
