Hi I am just wanting to know if it is possible to have one person appear twice in the same census? I am having problems tracing a relative of mine: George Whitehead (b. 1824 in Loughborough) I have found him in the 1871 census living with his wife Elizabeth and all of their children in Nottingham. However there is also a George Whitchead (mis-spelling) (b. 1828 in Loughborough) living with his father George, mother Ann and all of his siblings in the same census, also in Nottingham. The reson I think it may be the same George is because I have had great problems trying to trace any George from Loughborough and also in the 1851 census George and Elizabeth can be found with the mis-spelt surname Whitchead as well. |

Yes, there are many instances of poeple appearing twice. My grandfather's aunt (aged 4) comes up twice in 1871....... Reg |

Slightly off topic here but I have a Whitbread/Whitbread family who are often transcribed as Whitehead! Have you tried looking under this variation? Some of my Whitbreads moved from Bedford to Loughborough and then Nottingham - that's why this caught my eye. Incidentally I have a whole family who appear twice on adjacent streets (possibly an enumerator transcription error and also one boy who appeared at home and at his workplace (as a servant). Hope you pin your George down. Kate :) |

I too have several people appearing twice on various censuses. I assume that they were confidently expected home on census night, but didnt make it! OC |
