Hi Ive been trying to find information on my gt grandfather and his family for some time, and with the help from some people on here have decided to get my 1st certificate. Could someone please help me with the info on it.... It says... Walter Morris born 23th August 1882, 2 Sussex Court Leeds There is USD in capitals under the address (not sure what this means) Mother....Ann formerly Scott Father....William....Occupation...Labourer Registered 3October 1882 Signature description of residence and informant...X the mark of Ann Morris,s mother.....2 Sussex Court. Just would like to know what the USD means, and was it usual to wait for such a length of time to register a birth, and also why the grandmother registered it? I also would like to know, as its Walter,s father William I am looking for, what certificate would I next need to find out his place of birth etc. Thankyou for any help Lee:)

Leeds USD was a Sanitary District in the county of West Riding, in England. It was abolished in 1894.

USD is Urban Sanitary District. You had 42 days to register a birth I believe. Julie

It wasn't unusual - perhaps the mother and father were too busy. Kath. x

You need to look through the complete birth index (It's free to search on Ancestry - just register your name with the site which is also free). You need to look for a birth for William Morris in about 1843/1844 registered in Knaresborough. Alternatively you could look in the marriage index for a marriage of William Morris to an Ann Scott, just about the time of the first child's birth. Either certificate will give you his father's name. Kath. x
