Jane Toft, nee Alderson, married James Tulip in 1919 in Durham. She was born in 1877 in Sunderland, Durham to Joseph and Mary Jane. I found her in 1881 but do not have access to the other census. I am trying to find Jane's first marriage but have been unsuccessful - I wonder if anyone might have better luck than me. Joanna |

Sorry got chucked off the computer by my son!!! I am led to believe that she had children by her first marriage and certainly one of them was a boy. Don't know much about her as she appartently took my great grandfather for all he had and his one remaining child, now 93, won't speak about her. Joanna |

That's sad Joanna. Do you have the marriage cert to Mr Tulip ? Does it suggest that Jane was only married the once to Mr Toft. I can't find her on the 1901 census bit have found her mum and dad and sister Charlotte, Joan |

I have the marriage cert for James Tulip and yes it does just indicate one other married name. I have just checked on the County Durham registrar site, they normally list all other married names and there is only Toft and Alderson for Jane. Joanna |

Have just remembered - reference children - apparently according to my dad between Jane Alderson/Toft and James Tulip they had a large amount of children and had to find a house big enough to accommodate the two families. So the children born in 1912 & 14 could have been the first or last of many to Jane. Also family rumour that she was his housekeeper possibly after his wife died. Joanna |
