The St John's Road Workhouse The St John's Road workhouse, erected in 1869-70 to designs by RH Burden, was T-plan layout typical of its time. Built of yellow brick at a cost of £63,300, it had a central section with administrative offices and Master quarters, with male inmates accommodated in the west wing and females in the east. A dining-hall with chapel over lay at the rear. An infirmary with four pavilion-plan blocks stood to the rear of the workhouse. A detailed account of the new building appeared in The Builder in June 1869.

If you google the address you get a couple of matches to addresses people have got from death certificates, so it does look as if it would have been a hospital.

Well there was a Workhouse in St Johns Road Islington Workhouses had their own Infirmaries that later became the local hospitals. It was felt a stigma still to have on a birth cert that the birth had occurred in the Workhouse Infirmary even tho the mum had only gone into hospital to have the baby. It was made law that the address of the hospital instead would be given on birth certs, So am guessing your relation had her baby in the hospital at that address that was previously the Workhouse Infirmary

Thanks Kath, It was suggested that she may have stayed with relatives or it was a nursing home as at that time she wasn't married to the baby's father . So that's why i am trying to establish if it was a home for single mothers.

I can't answer your quetion, but quite often young women went to a relative's house to give birth in those days (a mother or older sister). I have a few birth certificates where the birth was at someone else's address. Kath. x

Hi does anybody know how to find out if a Road would have a nursing home on it in 1930. I have a relative who was born in 129 St John's Road in the sub-district of Upper Holloway, in the borough of Islington. Does anybody know if it was a residential house or a nursing home?? as the informants address an the birth certificate is different to this one. I have been told that this is quite a common thing on birth certificates. Make any sense to anyone or am I just rambling. I have been trying to sort this out all day and have a bad head now. Teresa
