Hi There, My great grandmother was called Elizabeth Jane Brookes, born 1895 Halesowen, Worcestershire. Her middle name is not recorded in the marriage records or Death records but it does appear in her birth record. Please can you explain why this might be? Thanks Regards Richard

Although given a middle name perhaps she had no cause to use it....( or maybe disliked it) so thought of herself as Elizabeth. When she came to marry, she just used the name that she was known by. There doesn't seem to have been a hard and fast rule about this....although I agree, one might expect the full name on official records. One man on my tree invented a middle name for himself, when he married for a 3rd time. Previous 2 marriages were in his registered name, - just given name and surname. ....Now why do that? Gwyn

Hi Richard I agree with Gwyneth that she could have just stopped using it. I always thought people would have full name on official documents until found my grt grandmother used none of her first two names (Elizabeth Belindah) when she married but her pet name Lillie? Also my grandmother changed her name over the years from Lydia (on birth cert) to Lillian. Kaz :o)
