I have IOM ancestors and I am just thinking that the name would more likely be KERNUISH, which would sound like Cornish to the English ear. UPDATE LOL - just realised the name is COMISH - I read it as Cornish! Sorry - going to bed now, I think. OC

Hi Reg and Jill Thanks for your quick replies. Yes - Reg, I did see that family on the 1901, but I'm keeping it on one side for now, as we believe that Dorothy's mother was Margaret. Unfortunately neither her marraige nor her death cert have a father's name. Jill - good thinking re mistranscription, it would be an easy one to happen. Neither of the ones mentioned look immediately obvious in terms of the geography and what we know of the family, but I will keep a note of them if we get to desperation stage!! Thanks again for your interest. Ellen.

Likely to be mistranscribed as Cornish? There are no Comish births on FreeBMD for that period but several Cornish births. Jill

I wonder if someone could help me get a start on this family for a friend. I am pretty proficient on Scottish Records, but am clueless when it comes to anything south of the border! What I know: Dorothy Elizabeth COMISH is believed to have been born in the Isle of Man. Date would be somewhere between 1899 and 1905 from marraige and death certs. Marraige cert she states she was 40 in November 1939, but Death cert (notified by her mother, M Cain) states her age as 42 in July 1947! Dorothy married a man of 64yrs, so maybe made her self look a little older to lessen the age gap, or maybe her mum was just confused in her grief. There is no father's name on her death cert. Dorothy was known by the family as Dolly. She married and died in Bradford, but did have an illegitimate son in Isle of Man in 1927. I do have an ancestry sub, and can't find her on the 1901 as either Dorothy Comish or Dorothy Kelly, (in Isle of Man or England) which is believed to be her mother's maiden name. The BMDs on Ancestry are a mystery to me..........thank goodness for Scotlandspeople!! We believe (but anything is possible!) that she may have been the illegitimate daughter of Margaret Kelly, who later married a Thomas Cain. There were 3 more daughters, Ivy, Josephine and Margaret, but again it is believed that two of those were Thomas' by a previous relationship/marraige, and only one was a daughter of the union. If I can just pinpoint any of the above on the 1901 or BMDs it would give us a start! Thanks in advance - I know its not much to go on! Ellen.
