Find Ancestors

I have looked for the 1871 census details for my great grandparents, they are just not there. I have tried using a wild card but still no luck. I have their mariage cert for 1868 and they are living in the Liverpool area. To my knowledge they never moved from Liverpool. They were, JOHN and MARY ROBERTS, he was born in Lancashire in 1843, and Mary was born in Kirkby, Lancs in 1851. In the 1881 census I found Mary, another 2 sons, John and William, also living in the house was a lodger, George Massie. Mary is recorded as 'head' and in the occupation part it says, 'Labourers wife'. If her husband John was dead by this time, why would they have recorded his occupation???? I have looked for a death for John, but there are so many in the right area that it is like a maze!!! I did find an entry for a John & Mary Roberts and a daughter Mary in the 1871 census, but the place of birth for all of them was Tipton, Staffordshire. Any help would be very much appreciated. kathlyn

Hi Vera, Yes, this is Mary in the 1881 census. Young John is my grandfather. I cannot find Mary Ellen untill the 1901 census, but she married and had a son, also called John. I did find a Mary Ellen as a servant in 1881 in the household of Henry Ledson, and think this could be my Mary Ellen as she is the right age and the Ledsons live in the same village as her mother was born. Hi Vera, I am sure that Mary and John were married when Mary Ellen was born. As for the 1881 census where I think she is a servant, it states her year of birth as 'abt 1868', so I am assuming !!!! that the abt. is just that, abt. As the 1881 census was held on the 3rd of April that year and her parents were married on 19th July 1868, Mary Ellen 'Just' scrapes through on the 'abt'. Kathlyn
