Yes, I agree with that - a surname as a middle name is almost always the surname of the father, if the child is illegitimate. (ALMOST always!) OC

He is IGI as Richard Hall Yeates, chances are his fathers surname was Hall ( came across this in Cornwall if the child was born out of wedlock they would give the child his fathers surname as a second christian name.

David if this is the record you have found it looks like he was Illigitimate, his middle name maybe a clue to his fathers surname. RICHD HALL YATES Male Event(s): Birth: Christening: 22 OCT 1797 Shipton Oliffe And Shipton Sollars, Gloucester, England Death: Burial: Parents: Mother: ELIZ YATES Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date. Georgina.

If the IGI entry is an extracted record, and only the mother's name is shown, then the child is illegitimate. Given the date, there well may be a bastardy order in existence for this child, which will give the name of the father. The bastardy order will probably be in the County Records Office. And it might be worth a look at the parish register - often the Vicar wrote in the name of the reputed father - this is never transcribed onto the IGI. OC

With anyone that is familiar with using IGI, I need help. The furthest 'Yeates in my line I can go back is Richard Yeates christened Shipton Sollars 1797 Gloucestershire. The entrant on IGI states only the mother Eliz, does this mean it is a cut and dry illegitimate birth and therefore the end of my searching or can it mean something else.Do you think Eliz Yates is Possibly her married unmarried name, totally stuck on this one and haven't a clue what to do next. Also what is strange is that all my Yeates' are from Guiting/Temple region and there are no entrants in all census' in Shipton Sollars of any Yeates' residing there. Cheers in hope, David.
