Thanks for your ideas, I had to go to work so couldn't reply sooner. I will check out those families you have found, I'm getting desperate now! My great uncle is the eldest living relative I have and is really pleased and interested that someone is doing his family tree (about the only relative that is!). He even has the family bible for this family but as far as I know, there are no other clues in it as to Eliza's origins, just her children. I'm just gutted that I can't get any further than his grandmother and a whole quarter of his tree is blank! Cheers Heather, I will post this on the other site as well, just in case! Sam x

Searching on the 1871 for all the possible variations for how Emason/Amson that I can think of (not allowing for complete mistranscriptions) could have been twisted for people born in yorkshire. This is just about the only result. Name: Eliza Hansom Age: 10 Estimated birth year: abt 1861 Relation: Daughter Father's name: John Mother's name: Jane Gender: Female Where born: Scarborough, Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Falsgrave County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Street address: 8 Sea???? Street Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View image Registration district: Scarborough Sub-registration district: Scarborough ED, institution, or vessel: 20 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 205 Household Members: Name Age Albert Hansom 7 Eliza Hansom 10 George Hansom 3 Jane Hansom 43 John Hansom 44 Marshall Hansom 12 William Hansom 19 Father is a Bricklayer as is William. There's a family of Amisons, children all born in Yorkshire, but no Eliza listed with them and the father is called Robert. Unlikely to be them but may be connected (uncle + family perhaps??)

I tried searching 71 for Eliza's born in yorkshire in 1860+/-2. Nothing jumped out at me. There are so many Alice Thompsons that I'm not even going there lol.

Possible that the birth you had could be right, guy could be a fireman on a ship. Found this entry when looking for a John who was a fireman. There are lots as you might expect, worth a look through for you probably, I was looking for possible misspellings/soundex etc of the surname. 1881 Name: John Hansen Age: 24 Estimated birth year: abt 1857 Gender: Male Where born: Bergen (For), Norway Civil parish: Vessels County/Island: Devon Country: England Street address: 'Stowell' Education: Employment status: View image Occupation: Fireman Registration district: Plymouth Sub-registration district: St Andrew ED, institution, or vessel: Stowell

I have been searching for my great-grandmother for a couple of years now, to no avail. Here is what I have: 1901 Elizabeth Roberts, age 41, born Yorkshire, Millsburg Living with husband Edward Roberts in Burslem, Stoke on Trent. 1891 Eliza Roberts, age 32, born Yorkshire Living with husband Edward Roberts in Burslem, Stoke on Trent 1888 Birth certificate for Richard Roberts, parents Edward Roberts and Eliza Roberts formerly AMISON 1881 Edward Roberts and son John living with Edward's brother in Burslem, Stoke on Trent. Also listed is an Eliza Roberts age 19 born Hanley, Staffs - but she is listed as daughter so not convinced it is the right one. 1881 Birth certificate of John Roberts, parents Edward Roberts and Eliza Roberts formerly EMASON (same address as in 1881 census) 1880 Marriage of Edward Roberts and Eliza AMSON in Burslem, Stoke on Trent. Eliza age 19, father John Amson, fireman My problem: I can't find any trace of Eliza prior to this. Millsburg in Yorkshire apparently doesn't exist and it has been suggested that it could be Middlesborough. I found a birth for a Mary Elizabeth Amison in Middleborough, 1857 and sent for it, asking them to check that the father was John Amison. I received the cert today and father is John Amison, but he is a Seaman in the Merchant Service so I still don't know if it is the right one or not (mother is Alice Amison formerly Thompson). I have tried tracing the family on the 1857 birth cert fowards to see if I can rule them out but can't find them either!!! Can anyone help with any suggestions? I am trying to do this side of my family tree for my great uncle who is now 85 and I have come to a huge brickwall when it comes down to his grandmother!! I know about the website dedicated to the Amison name and unfortunately I can't find Eliza on there. Thanks Sam x
