Trying to trace my ancestor Charles Knight and have failed miserably via conventional means (censuses etc.). It's a long shot but does anyone know if stable livery keepers had to be registered and if so where are the records? He's listed as such on his daughter's marriage certificate in 1862. Many thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Lesley, Have you tried historical directories to see if he is mentioned? To answer your question, I shouldn't think they would have to be licenced - bit like a present day garage or car hire firm! Sometimes inns stabled livery horses, and of course the companies running daily coaches had livery stables en route. Jay

Dear Lesley Try www(.)historicaldirectories(.)org - remove brackets. You can search by decade and keyword. Best of luck Maria
