Unless he was very rich, I don't think he would have had a vote at that time, so would not be on an electoral roll. Kath. x

You can only search an address on the electoral roll, they are not name indexed. Looking at NE Lincs website, they only hold registers for Grimsby from 1900 onwards. You need the Poll Books: Poll Books were used to record the votes that had been cast in an election. They normally have the voters' name, abode, and the place of freehold if different. Some list occupation as well. They are in order by place of abode, not by surname, so you need to have a location unless you are going to go through the whole poll book. These are normally found at the Archives, but the Central Library has copies for 1723-1868. Also, only home owners could vote and were therefore listed, and most people in those days rented their homes. No women or children will be included. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Added by Porkie Pie on 07/06/2007 20:10:50 My understanding is that the only people eligible to vote in the time period that you are interested in had to be male and have assets and income of £50 + per year, so your Drop Coal labourer would not be listed anyway. Sure some one will say if I am wrong? Roy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Added By Reggie Harvey on 07/06/2007 22:49:35 | Update Message | Delete Message In the years in which you are interested, there was an extremely limited electoral franchise........it is unlikely that the person you seek would have been eligible to vote. Thanks Reggie, What I'm trying to find out is when and why Robert came to Hull. I know his Brother George who was my Great Grand Father came to Hull between 1871 and July 1872. Thanks again Debbie
