Hello, I have just received some birth certificates which I ordered; and was wondering how I could find out what the area looked like and how long the family had been living at the places. Any suggestions welcome! Regards Rachel

Google, Google,Google!!!! Ive got family who lived in edinburgh and have found some wonderful photo's on the net of the street where they lived at the time. If you've got a specific address, you could also try Googling that. One address were two sets of my ancestors lived for many years, is now a youth hostel. Needless to say, as soon as I have the time, im gonna go stay there!!!! Were they born within the census period?

They were born in 1923 and 1928 respectively. I had a quick look on the google map but it shows what the street looks like now - I'm curious to see what it would have looked like back then. The places I'm looking for are: 3 Mill St, Prescot and 1, Bowling Green View, Swinton. I would love to see old maps of these areas, but am not having much joy on the internet at the moment. Can you please give me any suggestions on search tips etc? Regards Rachel

Yes, I see you have taken on board my Google, google, google tips. :) Rachel, try lots of googles - like old maps of xxxxxx Try typing in the streets and a date Try putting in the street in the image box on google If all else fails google for the local records office/archives/library and ask if they can supply any images. I shall nudge up the google thread over on tips for you.
