Jan there should be records for 1885. General registration in ireland started in 1864 (i believe) so there should be some mention of her there. Its getting to the info thats the problem there is virutrally nothing on the internet. You may have to take a guess with the William John that Betty found. I'll see if i can find him on the census. oops ! Sorry .... u can tell I am new to using these message boards ! All the info I have on my grandad is from his marriage/death certificates. 1.he was 38 when he got married in 1921 2. name just William on his marriage cert - fish fryer! 3. his dad was also a William but showing up as deceased on the marriage cert 4. could also poss be William ERNEST JOHN or William JOHN ERNEST I am at a total dead end with him at the moment. My dad would love to know more about his family. The other irony is that my nan, we think, was born in Ireland and there are no records for 1885; apparently these have been destroyed, so am at a dead end for her as well. Thanks to all for replying Jan

This is the only one I could find on Scotlands People about the correct date, you would need his mothers name to be sure though. You can view this but no Ernest in this name couldn't find one with Ernest John or John Ernest!! Scottish birth certificates do give both father and mothers names on them!! Hey Janet The best website is Scotlandspeople.gov.uk Its a pay per view site (£6 for 30 credits) and you can bring up the certs in front of you. Doing a quick search between 1881 - 1886 there is one William John Mathieson. Do you know your nans name? Mhairi

Janet Report 6 Jun 2007 20:52

Hi there ! Have been to the FRO in London today to look for a birth cert for my grandad - William Mathieson. He was listed as 38 on his marriage cert in 1921. However, no records whatsoever in 1882, 1883, or even 1884. However, my dad [his son] does remember his nan was def Scottish [grandad died before he was born, also a William Mathieson] so were wondering whether my grandad was actually born in Scotland. On his death cert he is listed as WILLIAM JOHN ERNEST but on my nan's death cert she is listed as the widow of WILLIAM ERNEST JOHN. Marriage cert just says WILLIAM. I have absolutely no idea whereabouts in Scotland my gt grandparents came from ..... HELP !!!! or any suggestion on websites ???? THANKS Janet
