Per ardua ad astra - motto of RAF - through adversity to the stars. |

Hi Janice, it seems that the second word should read ARDUA and from what I can make out from the LATIN site it means. PER ARDUA AD AURUM Through Thorns to the gold. ? It's a gem if it's something to do with archery, hence the name Toxopholite Thanks Tox |

What you say is right but I think ardua should be more 'struggle' than 'thorns' as in 'arduous'. Ozi. |

I'm sure Janice has the answer - I've seen and read the phrase a lot, and my father was in the RAF during the last war. (Sorry, WW11, not any of the others since then!) Bee |

Ardua means hard work - arduous. Per ardua ad aurum OUGHT to mean Hard work brings riches. Funny thing to put on a gravestone though! OC |

Maybe it was a message to his children and grandchildren that they weren't getting any money in his will and they had to work for it! |

Maria LOL! Revenge from beyond the grave, eh. when my dad died he left instructions that his headstone was to bear the inscription LIFE IS SHORT Unfortunately, the stonemason made a mistake and put LIFE IS SHOT. Good job he got the vowel correct... OC |
