You'd need to know which church, and check the Parish register. Probably a bit late for the IGI........ Reg

why does lack of baptism form a brick wall - his birth cert should tell you his parents names. Births Sep 1893 (>99%) Drury Herbert Philip Smallburgh 4b 52

If you were hoping to get the name of his father from the baptismal register, then I am afraid you will almost certainly be disappointed - by this date Vicars were no longer interested in the parentage of a child, and indeed would almost certainly refuse to record the name of the father of an illegitimate child, unless he was extremely influential in the area.(And asked the Vicar to record his name!) A very faint hope is that mother took the father to the Magistrates Court for maintenance - these records if they still exist will almost certainly be in the relevant County Records Office. OC

Dawn, was the mother's name Eliza or was it Edith? It's just that there's a Herbert Drewery on the 1901 census, born Worsted, Norfolk. His parents are Stephen & Edith Tweddle and they're living in Hartley, Northumberland. Edith is age 26 and also born Worsted, Norfolk. A problem is that Herbert's age is only 5 when it should be 7. There is a marriage on Free BMD of Stephen Tweddle and Edith Mary A, Drury Sep. Q 1900, Morpeth. Coincidence?
