Hi everyone Sorry I got called away. Georgina - That is the census record I was just looking it up again when Mhairi posted it. Mhairi - Thank you so much for that information. I didn't know that was what a marine storekeeper was and it does throw quite a lot of light on things. There are several family legends (all of which I have heard from people who remember this woman well). I have been told that she came from either a Jewish, Welsh or German background which might easily be mistaken for Romany. It's another avenue to explore. It might also explain why her birth was never registered Angela - Thank you for that also. I di think there might be a connection to Bath as she certainly visited it when my grandmother was a little girl. I have postcards which she sent from there. I'm off to see if I can find this Frederick Isaac in earlier census records. Thanks so much to you all. Margaret

There's this Frederick in 1891. He's a licensed hawker, which sounds like it might fit - and he's widowed. Marine Storekeeper, dont know if you know, was a scrap man. This was taken from Rootchat and might explain why you cant find them 'The term marine store dealer is also commonly used to refer to people of Romany origin (gypsies), many of whom would have settled down at some point. It's a fascinating history, but people who travel are often fiendishly difficult to locate in the census information' Mhairi

Hi Georgina That is a possibility I hadn't thought off. Unfortunately I know nothing at all about her mother apart from her name and the fact that she was deceased before Eliza got married in 1888. Margaret

Margaret there are quite a few births around 1860 for Eliza Walter's could she have been born before her mother married? Georgina.

Hi Mhairi Her first child was Mary Ann Isaac Buchanan born Old Kilpatrick 15 June 1882 but Eliza and my great grandfather John Buchanan didn't marry until 1888 in Gorbals. I have all the census and statutory records after 1882 but cannot find any trace of Eliza or her family before that. I have all the records for John Buchanan apart from 1881 cenus which makes me think that perhaps they met outwith Scotland. Her whereabouts before coming here are a complete mistery. Margaret

I have been for many years trying to trace the family of my great grandmother. According to 1891 & 1901 Scottish Census she was born in England c1860. I haven't been able to find a birth certificate but this may be because her birth was not registered as it wasn't compulsory at this time. According to her marriage and death certificates her father was Frederick James Isaac (occ marine storekeeper) and her mother was Mary Ann (ms Walter). Mary Ann was deceased by 1889. I can't find any of them on census records in either England or Scotland although I suspect that she didn't come to Scotland until the birth of her first child in 1883. I did find a marriage certificate in 1857 for Frederick Isaac and Mary Ann Walters in Bath but it was inconclusive. Can anyone suggest where to look now
