Hi Sylvia, Many thanks for explaining about the workhouse. I never had any of my descentants who worked in workhouses before. They were so young. I don’t know about Martha but it is possible. I only know Mary and her two daughters from 1861 census. Richard was a brother of my gg grandfather William. I am trying to find who Mary and her daughters lived with. But it seems does not help. Mary Waters was in 1881 census as she was a widow and lived as a lodger. So perhaps she could not afford to look after her children after her husband was died. Regards, Steven.

Steven, The girls were not in prison. They were inmates in a workhouse. For some reason, Annie Waters b. ca 1860, London was in the Bristol City Workhouse, Stapleton and no occupation is listed for her. There was also a Martha Waters, b. ca 1864, London listed in that workhouse. Was there a 3rd child??? Jane Waters, b. ca 1856, London, was in the St Peters Workhouse, Castle Precinct, and is listed as Pauper (ie no money and no means of support. This implies that Mary was unable to take care of them ......... or maybe had also died. Sylvia

Today I went to a State Library for free access in Ancestry UK website. So I am unable to find Mary Waters and her daughters in 1871 in Gloucestershire. Mary Waters, widow, B: c1830, Westminster. Jane Waters, daughter, B: c1856, Westminster. Annie Waters, daughter B: 1860, Bristol. I have 1851, 1861 and 1881 censuses. Mary's husband Richard was died on 1869 in Bristol. Could anyone please look for them in the 1871 for me? Regards, Steven from Australia.
