I am terribly sorry I have not responded, but for some reason, I could not log on to internet until 2020 hours local time. I thank all those who have tried to contact me and will pm them, just in case they have turned in, Derek in France

It's quite misleading really. The top left of the main ancestry.com page quite clearly says 'Find your family's heroes in our military collection' but then, on clicking on it, it goes to the index search page where it says 'Search all military records - Free through D-Day (JUNE 6th)'. In other words, you can look for matches on names, but can't actually see the records to see whether they are indeed 'your family's heroes' .. or just some other family's heroes that just happen to have the same name. That's why I was keen to see whether Derek had actually managed to see the records themselves. Dave

You're right, Dave, I hadn't tried it but when I did it wants the $299, even though it says at the top of the page that all military records are free until D-day, June 6. Margaret

Derek I have just been on to Ancestry.Com and whilst the index searches appear to be free, it is not letting me look at anything other than the index without upgrading my account (currently I pay for UK only) to £299. Have you managed to actually view records for free on the site? Dave

Actually, Jill, you can get some info about troop movements if you click on 'War Diaries of the First World War'. You have to enter Unit Name (e.g. 10th. Battalion). Margaret

You can also apply for the full record from the Canadian Archives site. I did this recently for my partner's grandfather - info was medical, dental etc - our Sid had 3 injuries so there was quite a bit of medical stuff as well. Does not give troop movements but you get some idea of whereabouts they are. Stuff re training sites - where they sailed to etc. Jill

Thank you, Derek, for the heads-up about the free military records. I didn't know about that! Now if you could just remind me of the names I wanted to look up! Margaret

Nine minutes and two answers, thank you both. It does not look like one of mine, but will root around and see from where he comes from. Thanks again, Derek

On the Collectionscanada site, there are the attestation papers of R. F. Bannock, born 14 Mar.1881, somewhere in Kent (Can't make out place name) I also can't make out name of next-of-kin. It looks like Beauske/Beanskie Bannock, 15 New St., Plymouth, England.

If you are unaware, there is free viewing on Ancestry(.)com on all military records until June 6th. However, I have a request of some kind researcher, who is the lone Canadian soldier with the surname Bannock, it is one of those locked against viewing items, any help, please, Derek in France
