can someone tell me where to look if someone was brought up in an orphanage in the middle 1800 in the bristol area. I imagine they were on the cesus. I have contacted one and waiting for the reply... did the children come up on the census.? thankyou anis

They should be on a census but may be logged by just their initials....So annoying if that happens. Do you want to post a name and details for others to help you? Gwyn

Dear Anis I have a relative in my tree who was in an orphanage in the Bolton area and he appears as normal on the census except it says 'orphan' and when you look at the census entry it shows all the other children. Best wishes Maria

their names were POWIS. unfortunatly, she was know as caroline, but apparently changed her name.....not sure about the name before hand.....her brother was william She's causing me lots of problems this one..... she had illigitamute kiddies with a rich man, she married a poor one, but gave the rich mans name to her children..... all very dodgy buseness!!loland this was in the 1800's....probably the 1860 and over. I have contacted muller's orphanage by email, but i think i'll phone them, and have also contaced the company she worked for (the rich man was apparently her boss........) he paid in money to her until her death....again, not too sure why!!! you know how family rumours go!!!! thanks for answering everyone......unfortunatly, i only have access to the free cesus records.... and she doesn't deem to be on there.....

Do you have details of her marriage? on the cert it should giveher pFathers name-you might be able tofind her as Caroline/? before she was orphaned-you could look then for her fathers death if yu knew the name and it might help with timescale of when she was orphaned. Do youi know when she died?

The might also be Bastardy records if she was recieving money from the Rich man.

she married a william jones in 1884 in islington....... at this time, she would have been young enough to have given birth to 6 children, all having the names of barnes jones. She apparently went to get the money from islingtons horticultural hall. the rich man was called wills (as in WD+HOWills cigarettes) a very rich man, who died with no hiers......(hummmmmm)!!!lol (she gave the middle name barnes to all her children......) As i've said, this story is family rumours, and i don't know if she was born in bristol (where this company first started...) or if she worked in the london part.... I'm guessing she would have been born around the 1960's, I have applied for the marridge cert, for POWIS+JONES
