Hello, I've receive a lot of helpful suggestions re tracking down my ggg grandfather William Goater (c. 1820) who died during the Crimean war in 1855. Unfortunately I've drawn a blank with finding out where he came from apart from fiinding his father's name, also William and occupation - ag. lab. William's son Henry (born 1853) died in 1921 while on a visit to a cousin in Tongham, Surrey. She is listed on the cert as Kate Brewer of Aden Villas, Tongham. I've checked out a birth cert for a Kate Brewer born Dec qtr 1853 in Richmond (vol 2a p184) but its come back as mother's maiden name NOT Goater. Any ideas how I can pursue this tiny clue (and perhaps find more background on William) would be gratefully received. At the moment my head's spinning and I can't get to grips with where to start. Angela I've been assuming she was a contemporary of Henry and born c. 1853 (without any evidence to support this!) GOATER is an extremely common name in Hampshire especially around Sparsholt as is Vaughan or Vain/e. Maybe if there was a marriage for a Goater/ Vaughan? Jennifer Sorry should have said - Henry was born in Malta in 1853 while William was serving with the 48th regiment. Many thanks for your responses and interest, its very much appreciated. Dear Angela Thanks for your replies. Yes that's Henry on the census. Henry's mother was an Irish girl - Eleanor McGreal - that's the problem - no background on William and apart from knowing Ellen's father was Arthur and a blacksmith that's it!! Just had another thought - what if Kate was a cousin via Henry's half brothers and sisters - William Kingston, the Kingston sisters and the Pyke connections? I'm beginning to get dizzy with this!!
