asking around the older family members, i have come across a joseph barnes jones and a caroline Tusan or thusan...... He was a gypsie, she apparently was jewish... he got thrown out from the family for marrying a jew...... this would have been back in the late 1880's. i can't find a marige for a barnes jones+tusan, only william barnes jones and a caroline powis........ would they have changed their names??? thanks to anyone who can help anis

i've only found a william barnes jones that married a caroline powis. william was a son of theirs which would correspond to my greta grandad the problem is, my dad gave me the powis name with william, on the 1881 cesus, it said they were married in 1894 in hanover, but his sister told me about this joseph and caroline tusan. and i can't really say to each of them 'my dad said....' or your sister said....'cos there's been a family tiff.....for the past 20 years!!! lol....gggrrrrrrr tusan doesn't seem to come up anywhere!! but joseph barnes jones does com up.....can't find his parents though i think there might be a family secret somewhere down the line.... or so rumour has it!!!! lol

Caroline is not a Jewish forename, although of course she may have been racially Jewish but not from a practising family. I am puzzled - where on the census does it say they were married in Hanover? Census don't normally carry that sort of information. Are you sure of the spelling of Tuson? Could it be Tewson? Not a Jewish name either, as far as I know. OC

Anis We can't even begin to help without dates............. Some of your info does not make sense, I'm afraid. You refer to an 1894 marriage being on the 1881 census...........impossible, date-wise, even if censuses carried marriage info.......which they don't. Reg

how stupid...... of course it wouldn't make sense.... i was writing all that at 2 in the morning!!! sorry!!! right, i'll start again, and then get some sleep!!!! caroline barnes jones is my grand mother. she was born in 1913. and married a ward. My father says her dad was called william barnes jones, and her mum caroline powis. we've found that marrige cert dated 1894. my dad's sister on the other hand thinks her mums dad is called joseph barnes jones, there is one of him around )and her mum a caroline tusan, but no, we're not sure of the spelling. Reg and others have found a marrige for william barnes jones and caroline powis, but i'm just intriged about this joseph and 'tusan.....' I'm only supposing all this happened in the london area....where exactly i couldn't tell you..... i'm really sorry about the incoherance.... as soon as something might stick, i get soooooo excited. sorry

You can't trace your ancestry on hearsay and guesswork. Look for, and then buy, the birth cert for 1913..........it's the only firm piece of info you seem to have. It will tell you the full names of both parents, and the father's occupation. You can then look for their marriage...and work back from there............. Reg

I've just looked at births for 1913 plus JFM 1914..........no Caroline B Jones. When did she marry Mr Ward? You may need to get the marriage cert to discover her correct age...........that document will also tell you her father's name and occupation......... Reg
