Can you believe, it only says 'Independent' for Charles' occupation - I'm assuming this means something along the lines of supporting himself by independent means (i.e. he's got money!).

Does it not give Charles occupations on the marriage cert so it cuts down your options?

Extra info: All i have is his marriage cert which lists him as being resident in Colchester at time of marriage and I've finally decifered his occupation on cert as 'Foreman of Works'. I also have his father's name. Unfortunately when i try to census it, there are way too many Albert Harris' of the same age, with a father named Charles to know which one he is. I'm stumped. Steph

I have to say, that the term'works' says gasworks to me, not a factory. If it had been an engineering factory it would have almost certainly had him as an engineer in occupation.I take it you got this from the census or was it a childs birth cert or marriage? If you google Colchester Gasworks (as I just did!) there was indeed a large gasworks currently apparently being redeveloped for housing. I think you will find thats where your guy worked. Can you not buy his death cert or marriage cert - either should tell you his occupation? Do you know where he was born?

Dear Stephanie If you google Colchester Lathe Company you get a website - www(.)colchester(.)co(.)uk - remove brackets. They mention on the website that they have been established since 1897 and you can email them. Might be worth sending them an email to see if they have an archive of previous employees. Best of luck Maria

Hi all! If any one is able to find out any info regarding a 'Foreman at the Works' in Colchester for me that would be brilliant. Possibly the Colchester Lathe Company (an engineering firm) or any other works that were in Colchester in 1913. Colchester was big in Brewing, malting, corn-milling & agrecultural implements. The Foreman I'm looking for any info about is Albert Harris. I know he was 30 in 1913 but i have no other info (except that his Dad was Charles). Many thanks! Steph :-)
