I went on genuki and had a look. You could be right. I'd have to find a baptism record to prove it though!! Thank you very much

Little Dean is a possibility Sue when I look again at the writing. I know what u mean about accents. Another of my ancestors was from Worcestershire, in a village called Suckley, it had been transcribed as Keiaster St Suckley!!

If the enumerators used a bit more ink it would help ! I can't think of any placename that fits. Have you seen a copy of their marriage entry? Maybe the witnesses would offer a few clues to help link Eliza to a family. William has an interesting name..... if it's been recorded correctly. Groombridge is a place in Kent so perhaps gives a hint of his origins. Gwyn

Had a quick look on Genuki - there's a Little Dean and a Lydney maybe the enumerator misheard or couldn't understand a Gloucestershire accent! My 2xgt grandfather came from Gloucs and London census takers seemed to have a huge problem - his name and place of birth is spelt differently every time! Sue

1841..........both parents 'not' born in county, but that still doesn't help with 1861. I would suggest that 1861 is an enumerator's error......... Name: Willm Gillman Age: 40 Estimated birth year: abt 1801 Gender: Male Civil parish: Bethnal Green Hundred: Ossulstone (Tower Division) County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Registration district: Bethnal Green Sub-registration district: Hackney Road Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Elizer Gillman 40 Henrietta Gillman 6 James Gillman 8 Maria Gillman 12 Mary Gillman 14 Sarah Gillman 2 Willm Gillman 40 Willm Gillman 15 Reg

yes thats 1851, for 1861 you have to put in Zillman. Thanks for all your efforts.. I dontl suppose this helps but I found their marriage on IGI June 20 1820 Shoreditch.. Her maiden name was Eliza Hunt. And he was William Groombridge Gillman!!

Yes Porkie Pie that is them on the 1851 census but on the 1861 census where they have been put down as Zillman, she has put her birthplace as Gloucestershire but I cannot decipher the town which looks a BIT like Lilly John!!

Julie

Julie Report 17 May 2007 09:59

Eliza Gillman born about 1799 and her husband born about 1797. I am sure on the 1851 census she has put down canterbury as her birthplace. Her daughter Henrietta matilda was born 1833 bethnal Green. Hope this helps Thank you for trying.
