Is there anyone on here able to solve a puzzle about Mill Lane, Bury St Edmunds. Where is it, would help, has the name changed? I found a Mill Road the other day and there is certainly a house (odd shaped) named Mill House. I have a family of Bannock, origin Hartest, but moved to Bury and lived at Nos 4,5,16,22 Mill Lane, father a corn merchant etc . So if anyone can help, would be obliged, Derek in France

Blimey Georgina, thats even worse, joking. I've heard of the bottom three, but not relating to Bannock. When my pal inquired, he was told there was no Mill Lane at all now, thanks everso, drawing board again which is not unusual for all of us. Bye for now and bless, Derek

Hi Derek In 1881 Your Bannocks were living in enumeration district 5 which covered St Andrews St South, Cemetery Rd South side, Mill Lane, Mill Court, Mill Place and Lucerne Cotts. My ancestors, also millers were living in district 10 which covered Cemetery Rd North side,Prospect Row and Chalk Lane. From a modern map the only streets remaining are St Andrews St and Prospect Row, the others possibly demolished when Parkway (A1302) was built. If you are interested I have an old map of Bury St Edmunds (year not known) which I can send if you PM your e-mail address. This will give you a rough idea of where Mill Lane was. There is also a very interesting site with lots of photos of Bury St E at www(.)burypastandpresent(.)org(.)uk Maureen
