Glad to help. If you buy the certificates as and when you can afford them, it should be quite easy to work backwards, and once you get back to someone who was born before 1901, then you can look for them in the census (or ask for a look-up if you don't have access to Ancestry). Kath. x

You need to buy their marriage certificate before you do anything else. This will give you your grandparent's fathers names and you can also work out the approximate date of your grandparent's births. I think I might have found your grandfather's birth (see reply above), but you need the marriage certificate first so you can be sure of his father's name, which you can then give when ordering his birth certificate as a checking point. Have found your grandparent's marriage:- John Magan, spouse Agnes Curnow March qtr. 1936, Whitehaven, 10b, 954. If you buy this certificate, it will give you their approximate ages (just approoximate as sometimes people lied about their age), and also both of their fathers names. You can buythe certificate online from:- www.gro.gov.uk/certificates When you fill in the online form make sure you click the 'yes' box when it askes if the full GRO reference is known. The certificate will cost £7. Kath. x

If your dad isn't the oldest, could you even guess at how much older the others were? Would they have been born in the 30's or maybe the 20's. Kath. x

There is this birth on FreeBMD which is a possible for your grandfather:- Name: John Magan Year of Registration: 1911 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep Mother's Maiden Name: Duffy DISTRICT: Whitehaven County: Cumbria, Cumberland Volume: 10b Page: 1360 With a birth year of 1911, he could possibly be married around the early 1930's, which would tie in with your father having older siblings. All this would need checking though. Kath. x

Sarah, as Kath said, start with your father, do you know his date of birth? Or maybe his place and date of death if after 1984? If you can find his dob, work backwards from that to find the marriage of his parents. If you know his date of death and it was after 1984, it will give his date of birth (as known by the informant) on the death index.

Do you have your dad's date of birth and whether he was the oldest child? If you can give his name and date of birth, or the name and date of birth of his oldest brother or sister then you should be able to find their birth in the full birth index. This would be a good starting point for looking for your grandparent's marriage sometime before the first child's birth. Once you have their marriage certificate, you can then work backwards to find their births, going by their ages on the marriage certificate. Kath. x
