Hi. If somebody could please look up passenger lists to the USA, not sure of exact year, but approximately 1910 (give or take 5 years?). Unsure of the port of entry. Name is Arthur Edwin Laing (b.1867, Stockton, England). He was travelling with a woman, unknown name. Thank you so much in advance! Carole

Hi Kaz. Many thanks for looking it up for me. The date 1910 sounds about right. - there was no surname for Elizabeth? I have received some messages from Rose too - it's really nice of you guys to help me out like this!! Cheers Carole

Hi Rose. Many thanks for looking up the information for me! So kind... The date Kaz gave for passenger lists of 1910 sounds about right datewise. Shame there is no surname for Elizabeth D... Are there any more entries for Arthur, eg. addresses, occupation, children, date of death???????? He is proving to be quite the elusive butterfly!!!! The information on Agnes sounds right - and Edwin C is probably mispelled (Edwin O (Oswald) - my grandad). All the info from 1881 Census I already have (sorry should have said that last time)... The ages of Catherine and James are correct too, also Arthur's weding to Agnes is the right info (place and date). I was hoping for some addresses, marriage info, etc. for James and Catherine in Scotland... do you think you can look that up on the Scotland Census? Thank you! Cheers and thanks again!! Carole

Hi Kaz... Me again. Sorry, I didn't notice after Arthur E. was 14 M.... a fourteen year old male? in 1912... Not Arthur. The other entry above that one is not the correct initials. Carole

Carole, I don't see them in 1920 or 1930. The 1910 census says they've been married 8 years but have no children. Rose

Carole, I'm a little confused! Are you saying that Arthur abandoned his family in England and came to America with another woman? And is that him on the 1910 census in Utica, NY? If so could this be him? Utica New York Herald Dispatch, 1910: LAING- To A.E. and Elizabeth Crosby Laing of 68 Plant St., June 13, 1910, a son Arthur Laing.

Hi Kaz, Rose and Margaret!!!! Sorry for replying to all three of you at once, but it's getting confusing replying to 3 different ones!! Thank you all for helping me out like this!! Sorry for confusing you! Yes, Arthur married Agnes McCall, and they had 7 children. My grandad, Edwin Oswald Arthur, b 1897, was the oldest. When Arthur left the family (the story goes he ran off with the barmaid - name unknown) when the youngest, James, when Jimmy was either on the way, or newborn. Grandad was then the 'head' of the family and helped Agnes look after the family... sad eh?? Not sure of exact date of Jimmy's birth, but thinking around 1910.. could be a year or two either way. The entry for 1909 sounds promising (sorry about me thinking M was his initial!!!!..... what was I thinking???? It was late...). The Elizabeth/Arthur scenario does not sound right (married 8 years in 1910)... they could have been fibbing? If this is so, then Arthur had a son, also Arthur, according to the New York Newspaper!! That would give me a lead... somehow I don't think so though. Think I will go onto the message board on the trying to find and see if Arthur Junior, at the New York address, brings me any replies from the US?? I am thinking I should pay out the $200 US that it would cost me for an annual subscription to the US Ancestry.com.... but it is really getting me angry the amount I have spent already, buying credits, and also I took a 2 week trial of Ancestry.com and they billed my credit card for an annual subscription too!!! This scrapbook I am putting together for my mum for her 75th next year is starting to cost a fortune!!.... Anyway, ladies, thank you once again!! Talk soon! Cheers Carole
