Oh and Les there was 2 Polly Grays born in Durham the same time as my relative was but they are lost on the census!! ancestors dont make it easy for you do they! part of the fun though!

Well i'd never thought of that but still none born in Durham where all the Grays of ours were living, with a last name Gray we assumed he was one of ours but not come up so far..thanks for all your help though alison

Did you try Rowland?

When would he have been born? It wasn't compulsary to register a birth until 1875 so if before then, maybe he wasn't registered? If after 1875, have you checked the full indexes and not just the freeBMD ones? Sam x
