Kaz sometimes you will come across marriage records with only 3 names on them, that is because the 4th name is either unreadable or they haven't transcribed the 4th name yet, I hope this makes sense. Night Night Georgina.

Georgina, im confused again!!lol I have the marriage certificate here for Thomas William Riley(johns Son) to Dora Leathead, i thought id just try out them on the bmd after your advice and when i put in his name it comes up but just his name and another couple, no Dora, i even tried searching her name and nothing was found. Georgina I feel that i have been going round and round in circles lately with the Rileys, always thinking oh is this him/her/them..think like you say i really need to wait on the birth certificate of Thomas and then order marriage cert for John+Bridget, i get very frustrated sometimes and think this time im even more frustrated cos i ordered the cert for Thomas 2 weeks ago and just phoned the GRO today to find out id asked for Thomas James 10b 7 instead of Thomas William, lol, thats what i get when i sit till all hours of the morning trying to do too much at once,hehe..now i have to wait again for the RIGHT certificate to be sent out...Many thanks for your help and your very useful advice, very much appreciated.Kaz

Kaz when you find an entry on FreeBMD you need to click on the number to show others on the page, for instance this is the reference I found for John's marriage... Marriages Dec 1870 (>99%) RILEY John Newcastle T. 10b 197 If you then click on the number 197 it will show all the other names on that page... Marriages Dec 1870 (>99%) FLETCHER Elizabeth Newcastle T. 10b 197 McGLENN Bridget Newcastle T. 10b 197 RILEY John Newcastle T. 10b 197 SHEERAN Peter Newcastle T. 10b 197 I hope that help's. Georgina.

Georgina Im doing all this research for my mum, she is coming out to me in the morning as she has more paperwork for me from other family members regarding the Rileys, so should be an interesting read, will keep note of all that you and the others have found and go through it with her, like you say a good move would be to order marriage cert for John+Bridget so think once ive spoke to mum i might just go ahead and do that...Regards kaz

Kaz can I just say that Riley is a very common name so dont assume you have found him on the census's without proof from certificates. When you get Thomas's birth certificate if his mothers name is Bridget Mcglenn then you need to get the marriage certificate which will confirm John & Bridget's fathers names & their occupations. I know it is frustrating but without proof you could spend a lot of time chasing the wrong family. Georgina.

Kaz you can search Births, Marriages & Deaths on FreeBMD which is the same info Ancestry use, the records are not complete because they are still being transcribed by volunteers, this is the web address.. http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl Georgina.

Aww right Georgina, i havnt come up against that, you must have to be a subscriber to see that do you? When i have made a link for marriages its just with researching the people seperately and finding they have the same ref.

kaz Report 1 May 2007 23:31

Georgina Hoping that Thomas William's birth cert will be here at the end of the week as ordered it first thing this morn, that will confirm what his mothers name was and hoping what you have found regarding McGlenn turns out to be the right one, many thanks for that, appreciated!!!x

Georgina

Georgina Report 1 May 2007 23:31

Kaz on every marriage entry there are 2 couples per page (4 couples per page on earlier records) so the other 2 people married each other. Georgina.

If that is his marriage in 1870 to Bridget Mcglenn then this could be Bridget on the 1861 census.. You need the marriage certificate to confirm the name of John's father. 1861 census... Name: Bridget M Mc Glen Age: 18 Estimated birth year: abt 1843 Relation: Servant Gender: Female Where born: Ireland Civil parish: Alnwick Ecclesiastical parish: St Michael Town: Alnwick County/Island: Northumberland Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: View image Registration district: Alnwick Sub-registration district: Alnwick ED, institution, or vessel: 1 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 157 Household Members: Name Age Bridget M Mc Glen 18 Francis A Thompson 20 Henry J Thompson 17 Jennette J Thompson 18 Jessie Thompson 53 John Thompson 48 Georgina.
