Just wanted to update you so get ready to be confused! Ok remember our Eliza Chalkley, well I had a theory and will try to explain. A George Gilbert, [uncle to the William Henry Gilbert that wed our Eliza] married ANN RACHEL CHALKLEY. I found them in the 1881 census, Ann transcribed as Arin! I checked this Arin out as she was born in Hertfordshire as bells started to ring! On a whim I sent for Arin R and George Gilbert's marriage cert. It arrived today. Here are details of cert: 1877 Oct 8th at St Pauls Church Deptford Kent. George Gilbert aged 43 Bachelor, Labourer residing 52 Douglas Street father Richard Gilbert Labourer. Ann Rachel Chalkley, aged 37 Spinster residing 52 Douglas Street. Father John Chalkley ,Wheelwright. Witnesses Thomas and Sarah Ann Miles [George's sister and brother in law] I then searched the census and found this: 1851 Census Name: John Chalkley Age: 36 Estimated birth year: abt 1815 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Sarah Gender: Male Where born: Watton, Hertfordshire, England Civil parish: Hertford All Saints Town: Hertford County/Island: Hertfordshire Country: England Occupation: Wheelwright Registration district: Hertford Sub-registration district: Watton ED, institution, or vessel: 7b Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 101 Household Members: Name Age James Brown 17 Son in law? Ann B Chalkley 10 Eliza Chalkley 4 Henrietta Chalkley 7 John Chalkley 36 John Chalkley 11 Mo Sarah Chalkley 43 I believe Eliza Chalkley bc 1864 was the daughter of Ann Rachel Chalkley and named after Ann's sister, being raised by her mother and her husband George Gilbert she may have assumed that her father's name was George and entered it on her marriage cert to William Henry Gilbert. Now I need a lot of help to find a birth for Eliza and a certainty she was indeed the base born daughter of Ann Rachel Chalkley. Eliza Chalkley married her mothers nephew lol! Yes Ozbird, You are quite right, that is her married to William Henry Gilbert in the 1891, she wed in 1883. I am still trying to find Eliza CHALKLEY before her 1883 marriage. I think we are getting a little confused now lol! I have ruled out your Robert and Eliza Chalkley, Kaz as my Eliza Chalkley was married to Wiliam H Gilbert.They certainly did do that sort of thing, more so than of today! Sally, i know this might look daft but look at what i have found, find it strange with it being in Sevenoaks Kent,and the son called Arthur, what do you think? Sally, i am wondering if this is the family you are looking for, the older children seem to be born in Kent, going by their DOB Elizabeth could have been the oldest aged 17 if her DOB is 1864, there is no Father here so maybe he was deceased at the time of her marriage,she could of just not been in the household at the time when it was taken?? Sally, Is Chalkley the name listed on her children's birth certs too? Rose

It's possible that she was registered unde a different name (assuming she was registered - but I don't want to be depressing here and suggest she might not have been!) - and that mum later married and then she took her stepfather's name. (One of mine has done that and I still do not have her birth cert as I have no idea where she was born and her surname at birth might have been Nash which is quite common and doesn't help - grrrrrr!) Hi Jill Thanks for your interest. Her address and Williams was Ashford, great help or what? That is all that is written on the marriage cert! I have Wiliam back in 1881 residing Park Street Ashford with his grandparents.I don't have a clue where she was in '81 or at any other time pre the 1883 marriage. This is THE biggest headache, besides Irish records I have ever had! I spent all day on 1837 website trawling through the index from 1860 - 1868 and found not 1 Eliza Chalkley. Guess she is mis transcribed on the census's or indeed was born out of Kent? Thanks again Sally

Had exactly the same thing happen to me. My Henry Brewer put down Sevenoaks, Kent as his birthplace - but no - eventually I found he was born in Lewes, Sussex and the family moved to Sevenoaks before he was 18 months old so I suppose he just assumed it was his birthplace. After that I found him with his parents when he was a child! Back to your Eliza: What was her address at time of marriage? What was William's address at time of marriage - have you tracked him back to 1881? Wonder if she was living in Ashford in 1881. Jill

Hi Everyone I haven't been on site for a very long time but know you are so good at finding aliens that I decided to ask for help! After 7 years of searching I am throwing in the towel. Here goes! My Great Grandmother was alledgedly born in 1864 in Sevenoaks or that is what she told us on the last of the 2 Census. I have her marriage cert, photograph and her burial papers! I know where she is now but cannot for the life of me find her pre 1883! I have searched and searched all the census, the gri and the IGI. All to no avail. Almost all Chalkley's are based in Herts throughout the census. I have tried spelling corruptions and shaking the computer, neither works! This is what I DO know! Eliza E Chalkley. Married in 1883 at Ashford Kent Parish church to William Henry Gilbert. She was a spinster aged 19 and the daughter of GEORGE CHALKLEY. I guess he wasn't deceased but hey what do I know? I searched him as well,again zilch! The witnesses were Martha Oliver and Richard Gilbert, William's brother. Eliza and her husband remained in Ashford,had 8 chldren, the last being born in 1905 so she could not have been any older than her stated year of birth on either census of marriage cert of 1863/4.
