Find Ancestors

I HAVE AN ANCESTOR WHO WAS BORN IN WOLVERHAMPTON WORKHOUSE IN 1870, HOWEVER HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE HAS NO DETAILS OF HIS MOTHER OTHER THAN HER NAME AND THAT SHE WAS A SINGLE MOTHER, DOES ANYONE KNOW IF I CAN GET RECORDS OF PEOPLE WHO WENT INTO OR OUT OF WORKHOUSES TO HELP ME TRACE HIS MOTHER.........IM STUCK NOW WITH THIS LADY AND WOULD OBVIOUSLY LOVE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HER...............I DID DO A WORK HOUSE CENSUS TRACE BUT SHE AND HER SON WERE NOT LISTED WHEN THE CENSUS WAS TAKEN IN 1871. AN HELP WOULD BE RECEVIED WHOLE HEARTEDLY...... THANK YOU FOR YOU HELP......LYNETTE JONES

Do you know where they were in 1871? If you post some details, maybe we can find them, if that would help. I have seen records of workhouses where a next of kin or family member( outside of workhouse ) has been named. Workhouse records admission books should also detail the length of their stay there. You could try and find out where the Parish/Poor relief records are held for that area and see if the mother ever made a request for assitance. These records can sometimes be a wealth or information - mothers name, dob, parents names, address's ect. Or find the records for the workhouse and see if they mention any further information about mother and son - Entry date, leaving date ect. Mhairi

hi gwyn thanks for ur offer of help i have no idea what happened to either Harriet Padmore or her son william b sept 1870 after his birth i have his certificate and then i can not find then on either the 1871 or the 1881 census. However William married in 1889 and his mum Harriet was at the wedding and signed the certificate as a single womasn still and then after the 1891 census she was lost again. its all very weird to follow but if you do find anything i would be grateful to hear. Hi heather William married a jemima lester on 5 aug 1889 at st marks church in wolverhampton, although when ordering the cert his name was listed as patmore not padmore due to the handwriting on the certificate. William was born sept 30th 1970 and his certifiacte sas he was born at wolverhampton workhouse. Thanks Lynette

Lynette, just a thought but how do you know the Harriet who signed the cert was his mum? Could have been a sister or another relative? Apart from his birth cert - does he always give his place of birth as Wolverhampton and his age - is it always correct on the census and on the marriage cert? Dont worry too much about the workhouse birth - workhouses were often the local infirmary aswell and it may be mum just went there to give birth because of complications. I have ancestors who have bon fide parents but are born in the local workhouse infirmary.

This may also be odd but i have only ever found william, his wife Jemima and 1 year old daughter Sarah ann on the 1891 census living in the graisley area of wolverhampton which they did not move out of. They are not on the 1901 census neither is his mother Harriet!!!!!!! I do know jemima died in 1910 but as to william and his daughter i no nothing.... Lnette

Heather, Harriet signed cert as his mother and listed herself as single woman, and then did the same on his marriage certificate too, i have no ideas if there were more children for harriet but in those days if she had more than 1 child out of wedlock things look murky lol. im totally lost but have a feeling im not supposed to know these facts it all against me which is driving me more ha ha.

You mean on the marriage cert she actually signed and then put 'single woman'??? Gwyn william was the widower i have been told that he later went on to have a 2nd wife which suprisingly i cant trace. i have also found that he owned a shop with this lady and i believe he died late 1950 earl 60's as m mum has a slight recognision of him as a child but no one knows anything definate

yes heather harriet signed herself single woman!!!!! i dont understand that myself as for the marriage i have that 2 but without definate ages and parents for harriet i wouldnt know if it was the right one.

Hmm - this is peculiar isnt it??? Seems a bit too much of a coincidence that the 1901 all the names you gave match and match that possible marriage aswell. Im still not clear - did you sign the MARRIAGE cert as 'single woman'? If you have the marriage cert for Harriet Padmore and the Bayliss chap - what was her fathers name given as?

this Bayliss name confuses me now, simpl because when william owed the shop wiv his 2nd wife the were both still padmore, the shops name was also 'Padmores Grocery' its in a trade directory in the archieves!!!!

I had just been following 'Fred and Harriet' Bayliss, they seem to be married with other children and I was just trying to work out if it they are one and the same or two different families......... There is a William son of Harriet and Alfred Bayliss on earlier census...... Gail.

oh i think i get jist of what ur saying now i havent got harriets marriage i was on about williams think thats where i got confussed. I will have to send off for the harriet marriage cert and see where that takes me as u have now provided me with 1901 info that really does sound like my lot as i know the didnt move out of st paul parish til the 1940's, so thats a big help and certainly something for me to go and hunt down now, i cant tell you how thankful i am, THANK YOU X
