Lynn Report 9 Dec 2006 18:36

I'm getting shouted at now to get off the computer but thanks to your suggested website I found this HMS WRYNECK and HMS DIAMOND (April 27, 1941) British destroyers (900 tons) attacked by German Stuka aircraft and sunk off Nauplia, Greece. She was helping in the evacuation of troops from Greece, and in the process had picked up, with the help of another destroyer HMS Diamond, around 700 troops and crew from the 11,600 ton Dutch liner Slamat, now converted as a troopship and under British control, which had been attacked and damaged earlier. HMS Wryneck and HMS Diamond were both sunk in the attack with the loss of nearly both their crews and all the survivors of the Slamat. The Wryneck lost seven officers and 98 ratings, the Diamond lost seven officers and 141 ratings. Of approximately 950 troops and crews of both ships only one officer, fourteen naval ratings and eight soldiers were rescued.

Lynn Just before we go out, there is a site called George Duncan's maritime disasters of world war 2. If you look down at the ship called SLAMAT - it sank on the 27th April 1941 - as this date is the same as Albert's death it could be a possibility to look into. There is a description of how it sank etc. Gail.

Hi Lynn That quarter is missing on Ancestry, but it may be visible on findmypast or one of the other genealogy sites. You can also see the BMD images on Microfiche in some record offices/Librarys - if need be I can go to Lincoln Archives and check that quarter next time I go - if it becomes necessary. So the answer is there are other ways........... Gail. x
