Lorraine Report 10 Aug 2006 19:25

Hi Laura, That is so kind of you, thank you. I know that James Deadman was born in 1878 in basingstoke and married Laura Marshall in Basingstoke parish church. I also know that they had My grandfather James deadman july 1913. other siblings grace abt 1908, Norman 1912, Lilian 1914, Jack 1915 and Bertie 1916. My grandmother told me that he had grace and norman but says there were no other children. I can not find James Deadman 1878 on the 1881 or 1891 census His father was named as william Deadman on marriage certificate but have no name for williams spouse. If you could help with any of this it would be very much appreciated. If you need any further info i will stay on line for a while. thank you lorraine

Lorraine Have you got James' birth cert? Some of the suggestions of where he might be in the census's are a long way from each other. If we know exactly where he was born this might help, and an exact date. I am looking on the 1881 census as he would be 3 and definately with his parents (unless they were both dead by then) Laura

Hi Maureen, Have checked out the information you gave me regarding Laura Marshall on the 1881 census there is no mention of a father but he appears on the 1891 census as Edward Marshall, Laura's father was William Marshall so i don't think this is the right one. thank you lorraine

Hi I have searched 1881 census for James Deadman (and soundex) born around 1878 +/- 2 with a father called William. There is only one match: Name: James Deadman Age: 4 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1877 Relation: Son Father's name: Wm. Mother's name: Lucy Gender: Male Where Born: Islington, Middlesex, England Civil parish: Islington County/Island: London Country: England Street address: 109 Georges Rd Education: Employment status: View image Registration district: Islington Sub registration district: Islington West ED, institution, or vessel: 56 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Albert Deadman 2 Ernest Deadman James Deadman 4 Lucy Deadman 27 Willm. Deadman 6 Wm. Deadman 28 I know it doesn't match the birth place on 1901 census but as he was a lodger and living in Basingstoke as well at the time this may not be accurate. I have a relative who was born in Dovercourt, Essex in 1888. I have his birth cert, I know it's him. His parents moved to Wandsworth when he was a year old and his sister was born there. In 1891 census he is only 3 but his birth is listed as Wandsworth like his sister. Have you looked on freebmd to see if there is a James Deadman birth in Basingstoke district in 1878? Then I would suggest getting that birth cert to get his parents details. Do you know where he was buried? If it was in Basingstoke I can have a look for the grave stone but am not sure if that would help. Might give us an age and dob though Laura
