John, I wanted to find out about an ancestor in the London fire brigade and I got the most fantastic and comprehensive help from them. They sent his complete service record that detailed every station he worked at, every payrise, every award, his training.... I can't sing their praises loudly enough. You don't say where your ancestor was based but if he was in London, contact: RITA FORSON Information Management Team LFEPA London Fire Brigade Information Management Division E-mail : rita(.)forson ( at ) london-fire(.)gov(.)uk Tel: 0207-587-4968

Three words: Data Protection Act. A phrase that most serious family history researchers will probably have had trotted out at them at one point or another, especially when the real law is so clouded in mystery it is just easier to quote this at you and hope you'll go away. Some places say there is a 30 year privacy rule. Some say 70. More still say 100. Lot's of things that are in local county record offices are closed to access for many years, and things like school records, medical records and employment files come under this rule too. I'd say your chances of getting access to stuff like this is negligable at best - at least for another 20 years or so. Maybe even more.

Not sure you can! But you'd need to know which service and where I imagine and then try contacting the relevant local records office. nell
