Hello Elaine, I hope you're still there, thank you for the information about ordering a birth certificate, I just have one question: If I was to go up to the national archives office could I see any certificate providing I have the index information? Just a query I have been thinking about and by the sounds of it you are the perfect person to ask! Thanks for all your help Hannah

Hannah - see one of my previous messages where I say - There are a couple of John Staines in Essex but it is difficult to say which is the right one without knowing parents names. There is no easy way - it is no good making an educated guess here - you will need to get John´s marriage certificate which will show his father´s name and occupation. I have given you the reference for this and you can order it from the GRO website http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ When you order make sure you tick the box which says you have the GRO reference - and the charge will be seven pounds. If you dont check the box then they will charge you more. However, really before you do this you should make sure that I have got the right marriage reference - and the way you do that is to order one of the chldrens birth certificates which will give mothers maiden name. Hopefully this will say Bunting - so you know the marriage reference will then be the right one. I will see if I can find some birth registrations for the children.
