Helen as you were so kind helping me last year with my Dumbrells I wondered if you would put me in the right direction for Sussex Buriels and Cemeteries or Graveyards How do I go about finding all the Death /or Buriels details now Richard b 1791 died 1867 (you found as Dumbul/Dumbiel ) in the 1841 census Joyce

Joyce Glad to have helped. I think we all have these problems when we get back to pre-registration times, especially with families that stayed in the same village or small area and named all their children the same names. I've got 4 generations of William, Mary, Elizabeth, Samuel, Robert and Sarah that I muddle up all the time. Doesn't help that the men all have the same occupations which they change every census! Sleep well, nell

1841 - got the blighters, they've been mistranscribed. Hold on. South Malling Sussex Henry Dumbiel abt 1837 Sussex, Susan Dumbiel abt 1796 Sussex Thomas Dumbiel abt 1796 Sussex George Dumbiel abt 1826 Sussex Harriot Dumbiel abt 1826 Sussex Charles Dumbiel abt 1827 Sussex William Dumbiel abt 1829 Sussex George Earl abt 1816 Sussex This chap appears in the index but I can't see him on the actual page: Thomas Dumbiel abt 1771 Sussex, England South Malling Sussex Unfortunately the 1841 doesn't give relationships or birthplaces, just that these folk were all born in county.

This is the only Dumbrel(l) marriage listed on IGI for Alfriston: SARAH DUMBREL Spouse: JAMES TOURL Marriage: 05 JUN 1759 Alfriston, Sussex, England

Unfortunately no Dumbrells are listed, but I see that the elder Richard's wife was born in Alfriston. So the younger Richard is presumably their child? nell

Alfriston is, and so I am checking now.

I looked on Ancestry. Unfortunately I can't find the families earlier, in 1841 census as they don;t come up in the index. I suspect you will have to go to Sussex records office to check parish registers for the elder Richard & Thomas, to see who their parents were. None of the parishes appear to be on the IGI. nell

This appears to be James and parents in 1851 census: South Malling Sussex Richard Dumbrell abt 1792 Southmalley, Sussex, England Head Ann Dumbrell abt 1798 Alfriston, Sussex, England Wife John Dumbrell abt 1833 Southmalley, Sussex, England Son Charles Dumbrell abt 1836 Southmalley, Sussex,Son James Dumbrell abt 1838 Southmalley, Sussex, England Son Alfred Dumbrell abt 1841 Southmalley, Sussex, England So and another family who are probably related: South Malling Sussex Richard Dumbrell abt 1823 Alciston, Sussex, England Head Mary Dumbrell abt 1824 Ripe, Sussex, England Wife George Dumbrell abt 1845 Ringmer, Sussex, England Son Edward Dumbrell abt 1848 Ringmer, Sussex, England Son Henry Dumbrell abt 1850 Southmally, Sussex, England Son and yet another: South Malling Sussex Thomas Dumbrell abt 1795 Lewes, Sussex, England Head Susan Dumbrell abt 1800 Brighton, Sussex, England Wife Harriott Hooker abt 1825 Lewes, Sussex, England Daughter Henry Dumbrell abt 1837 Lewes, Sussex, England Son Emily Hooker abt 1850 Lewes, Sussex, Granddaughter Since the heads of all these families are born in 3 different places it should make sorting out who is which relatively simple. nell

Unknown Report 1 Jun 2006 22:43

And be glad the name is Dumbrell and not Jones, Smith, Williams or Matthews. nell

Unknown

Unknown Report 1 Jun 2006 22:41

The only way to sort it out is to use the census and parish records to see who is who.
