hi can someone have a look for my g grandmother her name was Sarah Withington (she seems to be leading me a right dance!) she was born in west brom in 1859 her mum was Eliza Withington but she was born in the workhouse and wasnt with her mum in 1871 census. on the 1861 i think she was with her grandfather Edwood Wittington born 1814 shropshire and his family but she was wrote as elizabeth . ive had no end of trouble with this one as she was on census's as sarah and as elizabeth ,on her mariage cert she states her father was John Withington but he is not named on her birth cert as she was born in workhouse,and only names the mum!!!! can anyone help with this one ? ive had to re-doo half of my tree because of her!!!. thanks Christine*

do you have any eveidence that edward is her Grandfather - i'd not be convinced unless i had Eliza's birth cert / marriage cert

There is this one in 1871. The age and birthplace is a bit out, but it is in Staffordshire. I know he was Johns father he is named on his marriage cert when i looked for him on 1861 there was an elizabeth with them but not down as daughter or grandaughter! and the same family had an Eliza on the 1851 census who was 13 on the 1851 .

my gut feeling - as their was no father named on the birth cert m is that she was illig, at that JOHN was her uncle, not her father. Do you have the marriage of Eliza and John? where and when.what was Eliza's maiden name

John did not marry Eliza. John did not get married till 1873 in Stockton he married Jane Gibbon and was not married earlier as it was on his marriage cert he was a bachelor. this is why she has led me a dance!!!!!!

thats the right peolpe at 19 chapel st west brom!! . i have her birth cert and it says she was born in Union Workhouse west brom.Her mother was named as Eliza and no fathers name!

I can't see how you have connected your Eliza Withington to this family on the 1861 census. Sorry if I'm being thick!! Kath. x

Ive lost the plot completely here!

i just presumed as you all did that Eliza 's brother was wrote down as her dad on her marriage cert to save face i surpose. i havent been able to find her on any cenus 's before 1891 as elizabeth or Sarah ive just got the info from marriage certs and its took me 4 birth certs to find the right on .(if i now have the right one !!!!) . . i put my Sarah /Elizabeth with this family because i had john's marriage cert before i got her birth cert.which named HIS father as Edward . JOHN was named as HER Father on HER marriage cert. when i found his family i was given 1851 as well and ELIZA was his sister. is every one with me now? or have i still lost you all? L.O.L.

Give us where you come at this from ( you being the child of who, that was born to who , born when , really start us at the begining ( or 1901 if you are categorically sure)

on the 1891 census my g grandmother is named as elizabeth sarah Short.born in west brom in 1859.(Married to Thomas Short living in Middlesbrough) . i then sent for her marriage cert. . it came back as naming her dad as John withington a puddler. And her as Sarah Elizabeth . looking for him i came across his wedding to Jane Short nee Gibson (who was actually sarah's widowed mother in law). .on this cert it said john was a bachelor so at this point i stared to look for Sarah's/elizabeths birth cert to find her mother. . ive ended up with about 4 certs cause i couldnt find on with John as her dad. . this last one was the only one which she was actually born in west brom and it has no dad on it and names her mum as ELIZA. Withington.(doent say if she was married or not i just thaught if she was born in workhouse she would be fatherless) as you can gather i thaught her dad was JOHN and thats why ive been putting his family as her extended family.

NO Jane was actually sarahs husbands mother.( sorry gibson was janes maiden name.) im confusing my self now as well .lol. YES youve got it now Oz

i did ask for a work house look up for1861 the other day but no one could find either sarah or Eliza still in there!! in 1861 thats why i wanted a 1871 look up to find them !!!

YES thats right Jane Short nee Gibson re married a JOHN Withington in 1873 after her husband died. . and thats her marriage to Thomas Gibbon Short 1883 in middlesbrough to Elizabeth Sarah withington. . The only birth cert i found with west brom on it was for a Sarah Whittington which had her mother as Eliza.
