Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1883 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference CHADWICK Jane HEYWORTH William Henry Register Office or Registrar Attended Burnley RM/58/44 But I can't find a likely death for William between Gertrude's birth and 1901 (and anyway, Jane is still married in 1891.) If William was still alive in 1901 I suppose it would explain why James and Jane didn't get married, anyway. But as you say, it doesn't help with finding James's parents one bit! Kate.

Lou I think I have found James's first marriage. On the 1861 census James is a boarder and in the same house is Eliza Collins. oh blimey i dont know what to think now georgina! my g grandfathers birth certificate definately says elizabeth smith. how likely is it that a marriage entry would have the wrong name-as in aspden not aspin? maybe i should order that certificate and see. lou

Lou I wasn't 100% convinced but it seems a big coincidence that they were boarders in the same house in 1861 and then there is a marriage the next year. You may want to see if there is a James Aspden on the 1861 census I havn't had time to check. Georgina.

wasjust looking and so far cant find james aspden although a while back when i looked there was a james aspden on the 51 census with siblings and mother hannah. will need to spend sometime investigating further! this is so confussing! lou

yep, he was a coal heaver and a coal boatman and on his sons marriage cert he was a captain (no doubt of a bardge!) lou

ive got no doubt that is my james on the 61 census but im not convinced abt eliza as she is down from bolton and not burnley and birth yr is 6 yrs out to the 81 census but then again i suppose that happens over time. lou

At least James Aspden and Eliza Collins definitely married each other: Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1862 COLLINS Eliza ASPDEN James Burnley, Holy Trinity Burnley CE104/3/380 but whether it is your James, and whether Eliza could be Elizabeth, I don't really know. I do know that there are a lot of James Aspins, and I have never even looked at Aspdens! Kate.

well to make it harder still there is a james aspden born in burnley in 1843 so still within a reasonable time scale! i think i will order the marriage certificate and see what it says. louise

i was just thinking again! the marriage cert often has the address of the people marrying doesnt it? it might give me an answer to my question if i get this certificate. lou
