OK, so now we have 1901 for reference: which shows the one I got for the 1891 is the right family but his year of birth has been mistranscribed possibly. His job is actually greengrocers assistant. Esther Levey abt 1894 Dalston, London, England Daughter Hackney London Harriett Levey abt 1882 Southwark, London, England Daughter Hackney London Horace Levey abt 1889 Southwark, London, England Son Hackney London Isaac Levey abt 1860 London City Head Hackney London Leah Levey abt 1862 Chelsea, London, England Wife Hackney London Lewis Levey abt 1882 Southwark, London, England Son Hackney London Matilda Levey abt 1899 Dalston, London, England Daughter Hackney London

Thanks for that. Maybe he changed his occupation. Don't suppose you have to have that same job. Will this help with tracking right birth certs. How will I know if I have the right one if I don't know the father's name? Am I being slow!!!!!!!!!

Hi Deborah - and everyone else This is just a thought; apologies if I have not followed things correctly, as I have a splitting headache..... I have recently been tying myself in knots with a family who called themselves Altenacker or Burchell; I am pretty sure they were Jewish, as they had children with names like Judah and Israel. It was only on one census that George Burchell called himself Isaac Altenacker, and every other detail was spot on. I have been looking into Jewish names and what I have found has stated that members of the Jewish community sometimes used different names in different contexts; could this be the case here, with the marriage? For what it's worth, I have also had ancestors who have changed their profession on every census (and a certificate), such as beer seller/gas fitter/plumber/toy dealer in twenty years..... Lysianne

Thnak you so much for that. I had no idea they did that. That could mean that the suggestion earlier that Simmey could be the one is not such an out there idea. Thank you again.

P.S. Where do I find all that Jewish info out.

The one Jess found matches with his place of birth on the census. Debs, its a matter of finding every bit of info you can to give clues - I cant find Leah on the census for 1871 so it may be this use of names thingy again.

Hi Deborah Sorry for the delay in getting back - Internet Explorer decided to crash. To find the info initially, I googled something like 'Jewish names' change community (I can't go back and check as it was someone else's computer), and the sites were: www*jewishgen*org/databases/GivenNames/problems.htm and www*beliefnet*com/story/35/story_3569_1.htm Hope this comes out OK; please substitute dots for asterisks; I used to just bracket the dots and it was fine, but I tried it the other day, and the site ate it; any problems, please PM me and I'll try again..... Pleased the info about name changes was of some relevance; I am at that stage of headachyness where I don't know if I am making any sense..... All the best Lysianne
