Denis Thank you, i didn't think to look at old maps (i've used that site before regarding my london family). Sorry, i should have explained, I now live in Spain but when i did live in the UK my only time up to scotland was family holidays as a little girl. If 49 low street is a poor house then it might be that i do have the wrong death cert for Peter Morrison after all and it was a fluke that he was also married to an Mary Burnett! Thanks, Annie

Denis

The 1874 OS map shows a Low Street in Pitsligo and a Poorhouse. It's hard to see on the map but the Poorhouse appears to be between Low Street and an adjacent street. I don't want to mislead you so best you look at it yourself. Just google for a website called ' Old Maps' and follow the instructions. In the 1901 census a Mary Gerrie, described as ' Matron of Poorhouse' stayed in Low Street. Tyrie is about six miles north-east of New Pitsligo. All you need to get is one of those budget road atlases from a budget bookshop. In the meantime use the website Streetmap. To help you get to grips with Scotland perhaps google for GENUKI and follow the instructions. Denis.

Hiya Sorry, i've not been on GR, i've been stuck on 'Scottish People' all day and have spent a FORTUNE !!!! Anyway, i have managed to confirm that the marriage cert i have for Peter Morrison is def mine and my only conclusion with regards to the death cert or Peter Morrison with different parents is purely that the daughter who informed on her fathers death just didn't know her grandparents name and made them up. I still haven't found if 49 LOW STREET is a poor house, but its in NEW PITSLIGO ABERDEENSHIRE. Georgina, i have no clue on the areas of scotland but i am assuming that TYRIE is not correct? Unless Tyrie is in New Pitsligo? THANKS ALL SO MUCH Annie xx

Hi Anne, I've just put Low Street, Aberdeenshire into Google. There is a funeral directors coming up at 102 Low Street, New Pitsligo, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. There must still be a Low Street there. Hope you can solve your mystery. Kind Regards Julie

georgina on peters death cert it was 73 years which gives his birth as 1833 i've googled to see if i can find a work house in low street and haven't come up with anything. i think you are right about the parents names given on the death cert Thanks so much for spending so much time on this. Annie

Georgina

Georgina Report 16 Mar 2006 20:52

Annie did Peters age at death match his birth in 1828? I think the most likely answer is that Jessie didn't know the name's of her grandparents so just made some up. I have searched for a Peter Morrison born around 1828 with parents George and Anne and I cant find one. Georgina.

Georgina Report 16 Mar 2006 20:39

Annie I am wondering if 49 Low Street is the workhouse, if Peter was Ill he may have been there for medical help and maybe his daughter was with him (cant understand why it would say Inmate on his death certificate) And Jessie could have given birth there as an unmarried mother. I am probably wrong, which district was 49 Low Street in? Georgina.

Gloria because of the years you want the only way you can get certificates are to send to the GRO in Edinburgh. If you google Edinburgh GRO there is an official website and a telephone number you can ring and ask for their advice they are very helpful. Georgina.

When peter got married, both his parents are listed as dead. So his daughter would not have known them. Do you think that when she registered his death, she just gave the names she thought they may have been? Annie
