Can any-one help me? I have Mary Elizabeth Mansfield who married Michael Harris in July 1846 in Alvaston. She laster married William Johnson in 1859 after being widowed. She gave birth to George William Johnson in Derby on 27/2/1860. On checking the 1861 census William is registered as a boarder in Salford (but still married) and George is a visitor at a different address. I can't find Mary. I know its possible that she may be in hospital or asylum but I don't know where to look. Later in 1881 William has remarried to a lady called Caroline. Can anyone give me any advise on how I can find out what happend to Mary. Thanks

According to her marriage cert to William she was born in 1835 but we think she lied about her age as it would have made her only 11 when she married Michael Harris

William, boarder in Denton in 1871 is a widower, so you are looking for a death before then. Is it possible she died in childbirth or shortly after George was born, which would explain why he is 'visiting'. nell

so we perhaps need top establish how old she really is first. what was her fathers name please

Elaine

where was Mary born ?

Paula

Paula Report 4 Mar 2006 14:29

Her father was called George Mansfield and it says he was a 'maltser' on her marriage cert. I'm not sure where Mary was originally from but she was in Pemberton Place Nottingham at the time of her marriage

So, we're looking for a death of Mary E Johnson, sometime between 1860 - 1871 ....yes ? Have you got Mary on ANY census ? Would the 1841 Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire help do you think ? Elaine :-) Have you got ANY of the certificate's ?? son's birth ? who registered it ? it would say if Mum is deceased !

Paula

Paula Report 4 Mar 2006 14:36

So: Mary Harris (formerly Mansfield) married William Johnson aged 24 in 1859. She obviously got married to Harris VERY young .... and I have known this before ... I have a 11 year old marrying as well ! so don't let that put you off. I'll look into Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire '41. Elaine ;-)
