I'm still at it! I have found a Louisa Winfield who marries a William Stanley in 1895 in Kensington. In the 1901 census she is 41 and living in Fulham. Could someone please tell me the rest of her household? She was born in Isleworth - which, like Acton, is in Brentford district. Has anyone found her in the 1891. I bet she's there somewhere in Kensington, maybe Wingfield or Winkfield. Thanks for any offers!

I think the 1871 may simply be incorrect. I just thought a child found in 1871 ought to be there in 1861. Am I being too simplistic? Yes, she could have been illegitimate. I know that Arthur's second wife (Ellen Ann Burroughs) was herself illegitimate. Even so, she should be with them in 1861 because they were married in 1855. I did find a Sarah Betts who died in Pancras in 1852 - but I thought this wasn't perhaps her, because women were usually buried under their married name. She should be buried under the name Winfield.

This is Ann's mother & sister? in 1851. Eleanor Barrell abt 1807 Whepstead, Suffolk, England Head Ann Burroughs abt 1810 Buy, Suffolk, England Lodger Ellen Burroughs abt 1843 Buy, Suffolk, England Lodger and Ellen in 1861 (just seeing if Louisa might be with her, but no!). Ellen Burroughs abt 1843 Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England Servant St Pancras

Difficult one! I found Arthur in 1851 with wife Sarah Arthur Winfield abt 1830 Whepstead, Suffolk, England Head Sarah Winfield abt 1830 Buy, Suffolk, England Wife This is their marriage: BETTS, Sarah 1850 June Marriages Bury St Edmunds WINFIELD, Arthur 1850 June Marriages Bury St Edmunds Can't find a death for Sarah as yet. Do you think it is likely that Louisa is Arthur's 2nd wife illegitimate daughter? It might be that she hadn't yet taken on his name in 1861, possible staying with another family member? Alternatively I thought that Sarah might have died in childbirth as her death could fit around the time of Louisa's birth.

in what way do you think 1871 is ''off the mark''- not sure what you mean. when did Sarah nee Betts die?

JaneFrance

JaneFrance Report 4 Mar 2006 12:05

Reg, Just realised that I didn't answer your question. Louisa's father was a widow when he married in 1855. He had married a Sarah Betts in Bury St Edmunds in 1850 and she died sometime before 1850. I have another couple of possibles to add, marriages later on: There is a Louisa Winfield who marries a James Dolby in Marylebone Dec quarter 1879. There is a Louisa Winfield who marries in June quarter 1885 St George's Hanover Square - to either a Robert Osborne or Alfred Alexis Woodford. I'll try to follow these up. It's still the 1861 thing that sticks! Thanks to all, once again Jane

Thanks Georgina. I personally think the 1871 Census entry is off the mark somehow. But where is she is 1861? Strange

Georgina

Georgina Report 4 Mar 2006 11:37

Jane the only Louisa Winfield's birth I can find is this one.... Births Sep 1860 WINFIELD Louisa Brentford 3a 41 I dont know where she is in 1861 but the 1871 could be wrong and she could be 11 instead of 17. Brentford covers Acton. Georgina.

Was Arthur a bachelor when he married Ann? Reg

JaneFrance

JaneFrance Report 4 Mar 2006 11:31

I see what you mean, but perhaps the 1871 gave the wrong age? If not why isn't she with them in 1861, either under the name Winfield or her mother's name, Burroughs?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 4 Mar 2006 11:29

Louisa's birth seems to have pre-dated the marriage between Arthur Winfield and her mother.......... Reg

Jess Bow Bag Report 4 Mar 2006 11:24
