no sorry Cornelius must have married twice in his lifetime which i didn't know til last night, also thought that Herbert was her first born but Alice must hav been, I think my grandma didn't know any of this. So Lillian Hampson must have married Cornelius Thompson between 1901 and 1902, was it unheard of a child to be born out of wedlock then ?? But whats even more confusing is that his youngest daughter on the census 1901 was Clara Thompson she was 2 maybe his first wife died in childbirth ?? Then maybe Clara died cos my gran never mentioned her !!

Donna You aren't answering the questions you've been asked............please try to help us to help you. As for the children being illegitimate................it was much more common than you'd have thought Reg

This is what my gran told everyone , she was right when she told us about her father being born in Brierly hill , Staffs so i have just assumed she would be right with this maybe this is where i am going wrong !! I have just had a phone call and i have been told she was buried at Beeston cemetry in Nottingham which would place her near Cornelius on the 1901 census, so i shall go to visit that and maybe find out some dates !!! Sorry once again Reg !!

Let's start where we have confirmation. Alice Beresford died in 1998 and her death cert says she was born in 1908 ...... BUT this information was given by someone else and COULD be and most possibly WAS wrong. You say Alice married George Beresford .... they didn't marry when you were told they married so 1) we need to find the marriage between Alice and George Beresford first. The entry will give Alice's Maiden name. Send for that certificate and find out WHO was Alice's father for definate..... and also how old she was when she married. 2) Then find Alice's BIRTH entry and send for that certificate ... this will give her Mothers full name and her actual date of birth. then work backwards from the information gained. Use information given by relatives as a guideline ONLY - never use the information without verifying it. No disrespect to your Gran, she obviously does know a lot of information, but over the years details get foggy and some mistakes are made ... bless her x Elaine ;-) WHERE is Cornelius on the 1901 census please

Cornelius was living at 74 Lot street, Stapleford , Notts in 1901. My great Aunt ( the one who just told me about cemetry ) just phoned her back and asked if she was sure about dates she said yes she has the Death cert for Alice and George Beresford ( alice nee thompson ) and their marriage cert all dates i have given are correct, she read them out to me again. :-)

I've just gone through the birth indices for 1880, 1881 and 1882. Only three Lilian Hampsons registered.........none in Leicestershire. What was the name of the brother she ran away with? Reg
