My Mum, Bertha Mabel Hallett born 1912 had a sister Josie (possibly Josephine/Johanna/Joan?) who died of a hole in the heart when only 13. I've always assumed that Josie was the youngest sibling as both my Mum and Aunt referred to her as 'Little Josie' but of course this may have been because of her fraility, not her age. The other siblings were: Lawrence Charles Hallett born 1902 Constance Mima Hallett born 1904 Thomas Henry Hallett born 1907 All of the above siblings were born in Brighton, Sussex . By ( if not before) 1912 - I believe the family had moved to Portslade by Sea. Mum's birth was reg in the district of Steyning - sub district Preston, which would bear this out. I'd love to be able to record Josie's birth and death in my family tree and would so much appreciate any help. Thank you Cherry

Cherry Report 8 Jan 2006 12:25

Thank you so much everyone. My Grandparents were: Charles Henry Hallett born 1875 Lewes, Sussex Priscilla Gertrude Reed born 1881 Brighton, Sussex married St Nicholas Brighton 1902. I don't think my 'Josie' could have been Anita Josephine and sadly none of those names have a familiar ring Chas and Priscilla remained in and around the Brighton/Portslade area all their lives. If Josie was born after 1910 she won't be on Freebmd so you'd have to look through the GRO birth indexes. Ditto to find her death. nell

Hi Zoe and June, Thank you so much Yes, I have most of the census refs etc for this family. Spot on -your 1901 Census details show the 'right' Charles. On his marriage cert he was a Grocer and the Aunt he was living with would have been an Annie Bray, not Percy. ( A Charlotte Bray born 1824 was his Father Henry's MIL..) It seems I can go backwards to about 1700 with Grandad Charles but not forwards to find out when his daughter Josie was born and died! Same old story isn't it, wish I'd paid more attention when I was young, never thought I'd be scratching about like an old chicken when I got to my dotage, lol Many thanks, Cherry

Oh er Helen, never done that before! Guess I've got to put on my rain bonnet and galoshes and catch a train to Brighton then and make a day of it! Do they let you take your dinner in with you? No, guess not, these places can't have the hoi polloi dropping crumbs all over the shop, whatever next. Seriously though, is that what I do? Perhaps I'd better have a trawl through the Tips Board to see if I can find instructions. Thank you all once again. Cherry

Oh my goodness - what wonderful sleuths you all are! Yes Helen, that could be the mistake, Josie died when Mum was 13 not Josie died when she was 13. Both my Mum and my Aunt said that Grannie fed Josie bread and milk with brandy , honey, butter and vegetables from Granddad's allotment but it didn't help the poor little kitten, sad isn't it when you think that today she could have perhaps been 'mended' And thanks Orangeblossom that's my Mum's birth Sept quar 1912, she was born 3/08/1912! and her Dad was Hallett and her Mum Reed. I'd be so appreciative if Helen would look for the birth for me but I feel it's a lot to ask after all you guys have done for me today. Don't think I can ever aspire to being as 'intuitive' as you lot! Thanks so much for all your help Cherryx
