One name i have followed for someone was MITCHELL it varied greatly and yet were all correct Mitchel/ Michell/ Mitchal/ mitchall/ and a one point Mictkell. I think something you do need to consider is this... Back in the early 1900 could your ancestors read or write? They told the ennumerator their name and he spelled it the way he thought correct. If they couldn't read, how did they know if he had written it / spelled it correctly?

I have to agree with the consensus and add that my Cheal family are variously found on certificates as Cheale, Cheel, Chell and even a Geel. Life isnt perfect and nor are the transcribers, we have to be real detectives in this hobby.

jess, i have NOT dismissed it as jupp at all just said i had it as supp with regards to your evidence yes majority of you have found mary ann as jupp but jeanette has found her mother on the census as emily supp and on a final note yes i do have george frederick LEGDON birth certificate and also i still have alive LEGDONS in my family and this is how there name is spelt therefore i am 100% sure i have the correct spelling of this one.... i am very grateful to the work you have all done for me
