So the Chap , right back 1861/71 with the same name that i assumed (!) was paternal Grandfather (even if he didn't know it) maybe nothing to do with the equasion?- him sharing exactly (or i thought ) he same name?

No, lets not!! Maybe Sally-Anne knows that part already! I think she shoud go for a will of James R West. He's 55 I think in 1901. Wonder if he's on Family Relatives? (I'm not looking - not enough units left!) I looked in The Times for a death notice, but souldn't see one. Is his middle name definitely Reginald? Sally-Anne said something about that, but I couldn't be sure?? merry

Oh, I got that wrong!! James, visitor in 1901 who's wife Louisa is back at home, isn't James Reginald West (sorry Sally-Anne, if I was confused!!). He was James Roberts West. Sally Anne - I don't know if you have access to The Times archive, but there are some notices for the family of James Roberts West, though at the mo I cann't see a death for him. His father, (the same name, to confuse things) was high sheriff of Warwickshire for a time and in 1844 he married Elizabeth Boultbee who's mother was titled!! So if your James Montague Weston was the child of James Roberts West junr, than James Montague Weston's great-granny was a Lady!! lol I can send you any of these clippings if you like........Not till this evening though as am going out in a mo.... Having a cup of tea before I go....................... Found it!! James Roberts West died aged 72 at Alscot Park nr Stratford-upon-Avon blah blah he was one of the oldest members of the Royal Yacht Squadron. There's no actual date of death, but the newspaper is dated 21st June 1918. You must get his will!! He just might have made provision for his extra son in it - after all, his wife couldn't shout at him after his death and maybe she knew about James M Weston anyway???? Merry

Just got home from shopping - and trying to read and digest it all.... The ancestor I was more concerned about was James Montague's younger brother - Reginald Gordon. Fancy naming your sons TWO names the same as his own children! We have only got the Birth Cert for Reginald, not Montague, I live 20 mins from Portsmouth, so I think a trip might be in order. Husband getting very cross with me, he feels he is a FH widow, having to do things very secretly now. WILLS - How do you go about getting them? And would love to see the Times bit Merry if you can forward them later. You are all wonderful :) Thanks Sally

Oops! That's what comes of interfering when others have already done some! I hadn't realised they had TWO children together!! (Assuming both had same dad, which I'm sure they did. As for will for James Roberts West. Two things you can do: 1) Find out if he has an entry in the National Probate Calender. This lists everyone who has a will proved in any given year. Start with 1918 obviously, but occasionally wills take a few years to prove. NPC is held generally at Record Offices around the country. Sometimes there are very brief details about the will, such as the total value of the estate, but not much more. If there's an entry in the NPC, or you want to blast ahead and get the will (I can't imagine anyone of his social standing NOT writing a will) then you would need to write to: York Probate Sub-Registry Castle Chambers Clifford Street York YO1 9RG Tel: 01904 666777 and enclose a cheque for £5 and the approx date of death. They take up to 6 weeks and will search for 5 years after the date of death. Then send you a copy of the will if it was proved during that time frame. Tell hubby you are chasing a missing inheritance. That should do the trick! Merry

If all the above is correct this is Reginald Montagu ALSTON-ROBERTS-WEST Capt.RN. His great Grandmother was Elizabeth Boultbee daughter of Joseph Boultbee (http://www.boultbee.info/bfh/v.htm) and Lady Elizabeth Margaret Ferrers Townshend, third daughter of George, 2nd Marquis of Townshend and 16th Baron Ferrers of Chartley a direct descendant of Robert Devereux 2nd Earl of Essex.and his wife Frances Walsingham the daughter of Queen Elizabeth's spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham (of Blackadder fame). Robert Devereux is in turn a multiple descendant of King Edward III. What a great story.
