I am planning to visit the Devonshire Cemetery in Mametz in the Somme region of France next month, as I believe my great uncle Albert is buried there. If anyone else has relatives buried in this or other nearby war grave cemeteries and would like a photo of their relative's grave please leave details here (name and which cemetery) and I'll do my best. You can search for your relatives at www(.)cwgc(.)org ---------------------------------------------------------------------UPDATE - 07/09/05 ------------------------------------------ Based on the requests so far, I will visit the cemeteries of MAMETZ, THIEPVAL, DELVILLE WOOD, HEDAUVILLE and BÉCOURT. Therefore any new requests for these cemeteries only please.

Joan / Tracey / Dolly - Thiepval is now on my list - it is only 5 miles from Mametz and there are 3 of you wanting that one. Annie - Delville Wood is also no problem - Longueval is 4 miles from Mametz Tracey - the other 4 cemeteries you mention are in a different part of France, so I probably won't be able to get to them this time as we are only going to the Somme for the day, but I'll keep a note of them and might get across to the Pas-de-Calais in the new year. Any more? Helen

Johnathon - Another request for Thiepval added to my list. I am afraid Armentières is not near where I am going so that one will have to wait until next year. Darren - Delville Wood is on my list of cemeteries to visit so no problem doing that one. Helen

Helen, This offer is a fantastic jesture. You are offering what most folks would love to have, but realisically know they probably never would have had - without your offer. Please accept a huge hug from me. You deserve all the thanks you receive for this. I think this is possibly the best offer of a 'lookup' I have personally seen on these boards. (No disrespect to anyone else). I know that I will never be able to visit the memorials of my 3 Ancestors who were killed in WW1 ... but I am so happy for the people on here that you are offering to help. All the very best. Elaine :-)

Dancer - it is a small price to pay in return for all the help other people have given me. The way I see things is that it is just a matter of everyone being willing to share whatever 'lookups' are easy for them and as I live 'on the continent' a day-trip to France to take photos of war graves/memorials is something I can offer. Where are your three relatives buried/commemorated? Can I help with any of them? Helen

Helen Firstly thank you for your kind offer. I understand you have now decided to go to Theivpal and I would be grateful if you could look up the following member of my family who is mentioned on the memorial, his details are: THROWER, FRED - Lincolnshire Reg, 2nd Bat No. 40186 Location: Thievpal Memorial - Pier and Face 1 C Date of Death: 16/11/1916 On a note the Thievpal Memorial is huge contains the name of 72,000 men whose bodies were never found - so I am not sure how easy it will be for you to obtain photographs of the names. Attached below is a link, which should you find people, where they have indicated which Pier and Face (remove the brackets). Hope it helps http://www(.)cwgc(.)org/cwgcinternet/cemetery_plans(.)aspx?cemetery=80800&mode=1 Kind regards Sue

Susan - another one for Thiepval added to the list. I realise that Thiepval is huge - but I will do my best to locate and photograph the individual names people have asked for. Mhairi - please post the details of your relative and I will see what I can do. We are only going to France for the day, but if time allows I will do my best to get to your cemetery too. Helen

Sue - Bécourt is very near to Mametz so I can do that one for you no probs. Mhairi -I'll do my best, but depends on how much time I have, otherwise might be able to get to this one in the new year with the other Pas-de-Calais cemeteries. Helen
