Hi Sue Will put that on my list. I used to visit Havelock Street with my Nan, her sister lived there, not sure what number. Will probably visit the area on the 25th June before going to the London meet, so if you or anyone else wants to do a tour of the area, would be pleased for you to wander with me, or will take any piccis for people if I am in the right place, will put a reminder on before I go. Hi Lynda, Thank you so much for your kindness. I also thought that GnRy stood for Great Northern Railway. Nan had told me that he worked on the Canal boats, so that put me out a bit, but now it turns out she was thinking of his son, bless her :-)))) It is interesting to know that the France link is going through there, something that gg grandad could never have imagined when he was working there!!! With regards to your trip around Islington (and I am so Jealous!!), if you happen to wander down Havelock street and if number 56 is still there, I would dearly love a photo of it, that is the house that g grandad was born in. Hi Lorraine FOUND SOMETHING HOOORAY!!! I have never heard of the Bunk, but it is the ' Dealing with slums section' (sorry) It appears to have been VERY rough area, prostitution,child gangs and thieves lived there, and men gambled, playing dice or crown anchor, but despite or because of the poverty, peole stuck together, the police and local authorities were classed as enemies, the Street was notoriously crowded. A doctor reported to the Guardian.... It has been my misfortune to have attended some confinements , when both the midwife and myself have come away with fleas. In some cases there has not been room to stand between the bed and the wall, and in my opinion the wash houses should not be let out as furnished rooms. Campbell Road was the first target of islington's slum clearance aftr the last war. Hope this info helps, but it sounded a grim place to live didn't it? Lynda

Hi Sue There is nothing for Havelock Street in the book, but it is in the area I was born in, and the book has lots of references to that area. Havelock Street is still there, but been built on since the 1970's, lots of work is going on for the new link for the Kings Cross to France route. Could GnRy, stand for Great Northern Railway? Lots of people in the area worked for the railway. Any help I can give you about Islington, please ask, going on walk around he area in a few weeks, so any photo's you like let me know. I also have all the London census except for the 1841, so if you need any help give me a shout. Lynda

Hiya Nell Nothing in the book for Ingram Place I'm afraid. Are you going to the London meet? If so can bring the book for you to look at, and if there's anything of interest you can photocopy it. They could have pulled down Buck House (my London residece of course) to build the new Arsenal stadium, in fact for the Arsenal they they can have Windsor as well :)))))))))) HRH

Hi Lynda, Would your book happen to have any reference to the GnRy? I have my GG grandad living in Havelock?street, South West Islington in 1892, occupation Labourer GnRy. Also (if I am not being too cheeky!) is there any reference to Russell Road in East Islington. Sue:-) (half of who's ancestors seem to have lived in Islington at some time!!)

Hallo your Majesty My grandmother was born at 90 Georges Road, and before that the family lived at 13 Hornsey Road, at a block known as 'Ingram Place'. I would love any info or photos about the houses there. They lived there from 1865-1874. I went there recently and its all changed. I think the Hornsey Road house was v. near the railway line, where the new Arsenal Stadium is being built. Georges Road is completely different and I have no idea which side or end my grannie was born, but I assume the houses were all similar. This was in 1876. Thank you. nell

Hi Debi Only reference to Providence Place is the Baptist Church, one of the oldest c 1832, opposite Islington Green, there until 1931, when the British Legion took it over. It is now the headquarters of the National Asthma Camaign. There are references to Balls Pond Road, but nothing with aBook binder connection. Lynda
