Although I don't think your Casson's are mine, you do need to realise that people often moved around far more than you think. My Casson's originated in Whitechapel (as far as I have gone back) and were Gunsmiths. But they moved to Old Kilpatrick in Scotland, Birmingham, Barrow in Furness etc. -and looking at their occupations it is fairly obvious that they moved around following work in the Heavy metal industries and shipbuilding (ie. Clydebank). So you need something more than 'London area'. As others have said - question all your relatives (known as oral history) then follow on from the clues they give you. Start with your parent's birth certificates if you can. I know this can be difficult - it took me until I was 25 to prise my Dad's name from my mother. Then work slowly backwards and don't be put off by seeming dead ends. persistence is the key. Given your age I expect you have been asked to try to make a family history chart for a school project. Good luck Judi

Carol, Do you know if your grandad died? As you can see there are people happy to help you! I myself never knew my mothers parents, her mother died when she was young and she had a falling out with her father when she was 18 and never saw him again. When I was younger I would ask question but never got any answers, after a while I just stopped asking. Three years ago I moved to America and decided to find out more about all my family. I am now 39, last year I found my grandfather but unfortunetly he had died 4 years earlier. As you can see I left it a little late and wish I'd have had somewhere to look when I was 13. I too would love photos of my grandparents and I keep trying to find other family member on here in the hope that one day I'll find someone. Don't give up but remember it could be slow going and it may take you years. Give us as much information as you can and we'll see what we can do to help. Regards Fiona.

If you can buy your Grandma's birth certificate, it will give you HER Mum & Dad's names. We MAY be able to find them on the 1901 Census and take you further back. Why are your parents not helping you with the information you need Carol ? It would help us to understand your situation better .. and help us to help you better as well. Have you no Aunts or Uncle's that may have photo's that you can look at ? Dancer x

Unknown Report 21 Apr 2005 18:17

On a site called 1837online ... at a guess ! Its a pay per view site ...you have to register on it, and buy credit ... you can then view all the Indexes that have the 1837 - 2003 Births, Marriages and Deaths on. There is MORE info on the certificate itself ... but you need to buy the certificate. Dancer x

Carol If you can't use 1837online cos of the lack of money, you can go to your local record office and look up the references there for free. Do you know if your grandparents married before or after WW2? One set of mine, born in 1908 and 1906, married before, but the other set, born 1914 and 1915, married just after. It will help you to know that because then you can narrow down the years you'll need to search. The marriage certificate will give you their ages, occupations, addresses and father's names and occupations if known. Well worth the £7 it will cost you. As for pictures, I high doubt that anyone will have some on here to share with you. If your parents do not have any, do you uncles or aunts? What about your grandad, is he still alive? Great uncles and aunts are also a good source of info when you're starting out, if your parents don't know much. Good luck. Chloe

Carrol The only information I can find so far is that they married in 1940 in Deptford. Here is thr reference if you wish to send for their marriage certificate, this will give you the father of both parties and their ages as well as where they lived. Casson Alfred R H married Lock Deptford Jan-Mar 1940 1D 1236. If you need information as to how to get the certificate just shout, it will cost you £7.00.

Carol I don't think you will find out much about your grandparents on here - they lived too recently for the information to be available. The people we find on here lived well over 100 years ago - I know you think the second world war was ages and ages ago - at your age it is bound to seem like that, but to the rest of us it's really quite recent. Did you look at the answers about your relation who was on the Titanic? There were quite a few................... Rosemary

Despite your age, that still doesn't mean we can help you more. Pictures - what makes you think we'd be able to get you pictures when you don't know much about them? You didn't say what you were looking for. You didn't say when they might have been born, when they roughly married, if they were still living etc I was 14 when I started (I'm 22 now), and I bought certificates out of the money I earnt at my Saturday job. I was just saying that we can't do all the groundwork for you. Surely you understand that. I did say that I didn't mean to be harsh. I wish you all the best in your research. Chloe x

Well do you know when they married?? If so, look up their certificate reference on www.1837online.*com -remove the * - and buy it, and then see what it says. Sorry to lose my patience, but you have to do even a little bit of the work/hunt yourself before asking others - it's a bit rude. More than happy to help when you have a better idea of dates etc.
